I am having startup errors when booting up XP since I installed Norton with Mcaffee files still lingering. Ive uninstalled Mcaffee/norton and am trying to re-install NORTON

so far...
I have followed the malware instructions (username: bugmenot)
- REcently uninstalled Norton AV, Firewall (was freezing system)

1. Error log (report to Microsoft- Technical details) even without loggin in as a user
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

szAppName : SVCHOST.EXE szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

C:\DOCUME~1\Doug\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER067c.dir00\SVCHOST.EXE.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Doug\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER067c.dir00\appcompat.txt

2. CWSHREDDER error (send to microsoft)
C:\DOCUME~1\Doug\LOCALS~1\Temp\9d6d_appcompat.txt

Norton is freezing but showing that it is functional in toolbar- ???
System seems highly unstable (unresponsive to all norton/ cwshredder)

Should I go forward and reinstall my new Nortong package?
Is there anything running that would cause this?
Did I not clean up Malware completely?

Your help is appreciated!

Hi ldbonner and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

As far as Malware goes, it really doesn't look like you have much of anything. Lets do some cleaning up and see what we find.

Please update your Ewido if you haven't already done so :tazz:

Download and install CleanUp! Here
We will use this program later.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

4. Open HiJack and do a scan.

5. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O2 - BHO: McBrwHelper Class - {227B8AA8-DAF2-4892-BD1D-73F568BCB24E} - c:\program files\mcafee.com\mps\mcbrhlpr.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
O3 - Toolbar: McAfee VirusScan - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshl.dll
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)

6. click the Fix Checked box

7. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

McAfee (look for anything with McAfee)

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Archivos de programa
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools

10. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA
c:\program files\mcafee.com

11. Open up Ewido and do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

12. Run the program CleanUp!

13. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

14. Please post an Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log to verify all is good. Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Hi ldbonner,

You hijacklog is clean :tazz:

Make sure you run the Clean Up! program also ;)

After reviewing your uninstall section, i observed (with the Help of Atri ;) ) that you are missing a critical windows Update that is more than likely causing those errors.

Overview
Install this update to address an issue that may cause a "Generic Host Process" error message to be displayed after you install security update MS05-012, or cause attachment file names not to be displayed in Rich Text e-mail messages. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer.

info link http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

The update is "Update for Windows XP (KB894391)"

I downloaded and installed the patch.

upon rebooting, i had significant wait for windows to completely load up.

when i initiated my browser, it took me back to the MICROSOFT PATCH FIX site and gave me the SAME PATCH to load.

obviously something went wrong, can you explain this at all?

thanks,

doug
