I'm looking at replacing my Tab Pro 10.1 with a Surface 3 Pro. I'm just curious if the Surface 3 would be a better machine than my laptop. My laptop is an Asus G73 with an i7 720 1.6 ghz quad core CPU, 8 gb RAM and a Radeon HD 5870 GPU. The Surface 3 pro has a i5 1.9 ghz quad core CPU and 4 gb RAM. The laptop has a 17" 1920 by 1080 display. The Surface 3 has a 12" 2160 by 1440 display. I know it would seem obvious that the laptop would be a better machine other than it weighs a ton and battery life is a joke. But the laptop is 5 years old. Even with the lesser specs, I thought maybe the tablet having components that are a few generations newer might make a difference. Everyone talks about how the Surface Pro tablets are great for replacing laptops. The 17" display is nice but I honestly watch more movies and videos on my 10" Tab Pro than I do on my laptop. I want a Windows tablet so I can run the same software on all my devices (PC, laptop and tablet) and the 12" tablet would be much more convenient for work than lugging a huge 8 pound laptop back and forth to the hangar.

What's your definition of "better"?

 

The tablet is lighter with a higher res screen and will run longer but, the laptop has a larger screen, double the RAM, dedicated GPU and a more powerful CPU.

 

The more powerful the components and the larger the screen, the less battery life. The bigger the battery the longer it will last but, it's then heavier.

 

It's a trade off. You have to pick what works best for your needs.

Yeah, I understand all that. I just thought that maybe because the Surface is several generations newer that it might be a stronger machine even with it's somewhat lesser specs.

in my opinion no the tablet is not "better" than your laptop, but then again from what you've said the tablet will suit your needs just fine or maybe better anyway just because you do not seem to use the full performance capabilities of your laptop in the first place.

 

watching video's doesn't need a lot of gpu/cpu power, it's only when you come to playing games or video editing etc (anything that uses 100% of both/either the cpu and gpu.). that a pc/laptop/tablet is used to it's full potential, things like surfing the internet, word processing, watching video's etc don't come anywhere near to most of todays computers capabilities.

I purchased the Surface about 5 months ago and I love it. It is light and it has all of the conveniences of a tablet with the power of a laptop with the typecover. what's extremely nice is that the surface pen that contains a very smooth writing experience.
