I have a dell 8300 with 64 bit windows 7 professional used with Epson 837.  The OS was upgrades to windows 10 about 2 months ago.  The scanner worked well until yesterday when I scanned in multiple documents.

To day when the Epson scan is launched it says that "it cannot communicate with scanner".  The printer is still printing when I tested it today.  I checked all connections and they are ok.  I even changed to different USB port on the computer.  When I tried to scan directly from the printer It says "Communication error".  I even changed the USB cable. I checked for driver updates and found to be up to date.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

:welcome:   bpmslvm,

Check for a system restore point that is before the scanner stopped working, steps from MS are below, if this does not work you may need to uninstall and then reinstall the printers software;

This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time, called a system restore point. Restore points are generated when you install a new app, driver or Windows update, and when you create a restore point manually. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers and updates installed after the restore point was made.

  1. Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, then select Control Panel.

  2. Search Control Panel for Recovery.

  3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.

  4. Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver or update, then select Next > Finish.

Note
  • If you can't see any restore points, it might be because system protection isn't turned on. To check, go to theControl Panel, search for Recovery, then select Recovery > Configure System Restore > Configure and make sure that Turn on system protection is selected.

The steps written in Epson Artisan 837 Manual to fix this issue are following:

You need to uninstall everything to do with Epson.

Reboot your system.

Then reinstall the driver and software.

Also check Windows Imaging Service is started.
