[Manion]

I followed all the required steps listed in the preliminary information, and I'm still having problems with a few things that occur when I start up my computer. Among other things, an IE window opens up to some unknown site, and I receive messages that indicate foreign programs starting up (I don't allow them to start). • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Wild Tangent < This is related to online gaming. However, it has spyware bundled in with it, and causes serious system slow downs. You can still play all your favorite games EXACTLY as before, without this program running.

Ok, after fixing the checked HJT entries, I rebooted in safe mode and went to Add/Remove programs. There was no entry for Media Access, but there were two for WildTangent: WildTangent Game Channel and WildTangent Web Driver. I removed the Game Channel, but when I clicked the button for Web Driver, nothing happened. Other programs that looked suspicious were "Web Savings from Ebates" and "Weatherbug," and of course Ebates MoeMoneyMaker which still gave an error when I tried to remove it. There were some others I wasn't sure of but which I think are fine, I can check again though if it would help. Also, there were no folders for Ebates MoeMoneyMaker or Media Access; however, there were folders for WebRebates(2), WebRebates(3), and Incredifind. I didn't delete these folders, though. Finally, there was no mvrlbi.exe file, stobject.exe wasn't there but stobject.dll was (I deleted it), and msi.exe wasn't there (before using HJT to delete things, I would receive a message that msi.exe was trying to run when I started my computer, but now I don't).

First..before I forget again...I want to say "WAY TO GO" for allowing the United Devices to run on your pc!! When I was at Community College two years ago in IL, our chapter of Phi Theta Kappa all signed up for this. Most of us still run the UD agent on our pc and have been doing so continuously for two years. It's such a GREAT program, and can help sooo many people! Kudos to you for running it!

Ok now back to the pc problems!


1. Open HijackThis and click "Open the Misc Tools Section". Click the button "Open Uninstall Manager" then locate the "Ebates MoeMoneyMaker" on the left side. Then after you highlight it, click the button that says "Delete this entry"



2. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Web Savings from Ebates
Weatherbug (or AWS)
WebRebates (ALL instances of it!)
Incredifind

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Web Savings from Ebates
C:\Program Files\Weatherbug (or AWS)
C:\Program Files\WebRebates (all instances)
C:\Program Files\Incredifind
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker

After that, Reboot.

Hello again! That's a clean log now! The Web Savings from Ebates actually was removed in the Ewido scan, what you see in Add/Remove is the leftover "shell" that housed the program. Go ahead and use HJT to delete that leftover, like you did with MoeMoneyMaker!

Congratulations! Your log is now clean!
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
