Hello. Having been very disappointed with the Black Friday/Cyber Monday offerings of home desktops, I have decided to build my own. After reading on different websites, I have decided that I really don't even know where to start. The desktop will be used for surfing the net, online educational courses, watching movies and playing a few games. Examples of games are, hay day, chess, sudoku, maybe a war game or two. I believe I should be in the i5-4460/4590 area. Am I even on the right track?

Those are very basic and undemanding games that you mention so it would be better if you can tell us what the war games are that you would like to play.

 

I would suggest that you keep in mind that it would be wise to build a better system now rather than have to upgrade in only a few months time when a new war game comes out that you want to play, based on the information that we have for now you may be ok with a processor that also provides graphics.

 

Can you also tell us your maximum budget and the country in which you will be purchasing the parts.

Thank you. Hoping to budget $1000 for the desk top unit. I'm thinking separate budget for monitor. USA. Also. You are right about building better first. Is it possible to play something like battlefield 4 on my budget?

Also, maybe a space game like Homeworld remastered. It looks interesting. Yes please figure the OS in the price. In addition, I have a dual band router and would like to have a dual band wireless card as well. I do apologize for adding this late as I didn't consider this before. Thank you for your time and efforts. I really appreciate the help very much. If the price runs over a little...that's ok. The budget is a ball park for the wife, lol.

Yes it is doable with a $1000 budget, please note that if you need to purchase an OS such as 64-bit Windows your build budget will be nearer the $900 mark.

 

Off to put a list of parts together for you so it would be helpful if you can let us know if we need to factor the cost of Windows into the $1000 budget.

If you have any questions about any of the items or have any ideas of your own please let us know, the parts are not set in stone and we may be able to change one or two items to to get the price down enough to be able to squeeze a wireless card in for around the same budget, the CPU, Ram, GPU and PSU I would not change though as they give you a solid foundation for your build that will last for years.
