Weird internet stuttering issue

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place for this, since this is more of a software problem I guess, but my internet seems to be acting a bit weird.

I like to Skype with my friend from time to time, and watch films with him on a video call website, http://rabb.it.

Until around a month ago, everything seemed to work just fine. After that I started having a weird lag problem. My friend and I used to have our webcams on while chatting, but now, if I have my webcam on, the whole call's quality goes to absolute garbage. The audio quality and my friend's webcam quality turns horrible the moment I turn on my webcam, and I have no idea why.

On rabb.it, we used to watch films while video chatting, but now it's become nearly impossible. When I turn on my webcam, the film (or anything else we're watching, such as a Youtube video) starts lagging constantly. However, Speedtest never shows any difference in my internet speed. I get a solid 50-60 mb/s all the time, and this lagging problem never occurs with anything else, only when using my webcam.

I've been trying to fix this problem for some time now, I've restarted my router numerous times and reset it to factory settings more than once, even replaced it with a new one, but it didn't help.

Odd thing is, when I don't use my router and plug my laptop straight to the wall with an ethernet cable, the lag disappears completely. So this seems to be a router problem, but not with the hardware itself because replacing it didn't help at all, and the router normally works flawlessly, this is the only time I've had problems with it.

Any help?

How do you connect to the Internet when you use the router?  WiFi or Ethernet cable?

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.
Close all browser and make sure the webcam is off.
Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Now do whatever you need to do to turn on the webcam  and make a second process explorer log and post it.

Oh, and I use WiFi.

And the second log is when I'm using rabb.it with my friend, with both our webcams on, and a film playing.

Looks pretty decent in both logs.  Was it stuttering in the second one?

et the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)  Download, Save and Install it.

Close all browsers and open progrms before running Speccy.  Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.  (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.)  Save the file and close notepad  Attach the file to your next post as it is usually too large for the forum (Click on More Reply Options then Choose file, select the file, Open, Attach this File) Uninstall Speccy.

Yes, I had massive stuttering in the second one.

And I remembered something important when discussing this issue with my friend last night. I bought my laptop used around five months ago, and it had Windows 7 pre-installed on it. However, around a month later, I upgraded to Windows 10, which turned out to be a bad idea. At first it worked flawlessly, but after the 30 days (when I still could've downgraded back to Windows 7), I started having all kinds of graphical issues and crashes all the time. And I couldn't download Windows 7 from the official site and reinstall it the easy way, because the site obviously wouldn't accept the serial number given with this laptop. Luckily, my college offers students copies of Windows 7 Professional (and other operating systems) for free, so I got a new serial number and downloaded it that way.

But apparently the install didn't include drivers at all, so I had to use my friend's computer to copy drivers to a cd (I didn't even have a USB driver so using my external hard drive was not an option) and install them to my computer that way. Including the WiFi drivers and such.

Now the important thing is, I never had any problems before I reinstalled Windows 7. I only remember the problems starting after I'd reinstalled it over Windows 10. So, my friend suggested I'd reinstall Windows 7 as a last resort, and it got me thinking, could this be a driver issue? Since I had loads of problems with them, and I had to download them from Lenovo's website, I think that could be the problem. But it seems really weird that my internet drastically slows down every 10 to 20 seconds for a while only when using my webcam during a video call.

Because this stuttering thing isn't the only weird thing happening with my internet. Last night, for example, I just weirdly disconnected at one point for some reason. My laptop just didn't connect to my wifi anymore, and when I tried to reconnect, it just said "Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual". I had to flip the WiFi switch on my laptop's side off for a while then turn it back on to reconnect. This sometimes occurs when I wake my laptop after sleep as well - I can't connect to my WiFi and I have to turn all wireless connections off and on again.

I ran Speccy and saved a log but couldn't find the OS serial number, so I'll attach it as it is.

Speccy came out a bit weird this time.  Usually it's  a text file.  But it appears your temps are good and the hard drive it in good shape.

Do you have two versions of Java installed?  Make sure you only have one and that it is the latest version.

Also make sure you have the latest version of Flash.

Make and model of your laptop?  Have you been to your PC maker's site and looked for new wireless, webcam & video drivers since you reinstalled?

Right click on Computer and select Manage then Device Manager.  View, Show Hidden Devices.  Do you see anything with a yellow mark?

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then click on the arrow in front of Event Viewer. Next Click on the arrow in front of Windows Logs Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.  Then type (with an Enter after each line).
sfc  /scannow

(This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint?  IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

Copy the next two lines:

findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Copy and paste the text from notepad or if it is too big, just attach the file.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

(Second time you run vew it will overwrite the first log so copy it to a reply or rename it first.)

Apparently I did have two versions of Java for some reason, Update 65 and 66, so I uninstalled 65.
I didn't have Flash on my computer either, but I had the Chrome plugin, so I installed it to my computer as well.

My laptop is a Lenovo W510, and yes, I've checked for latest drivers, and mine are all up to date. I'd also like to point out that my laptop doesn't have a built-in webcam, so I use my separate one, which has always worked flawlessly before.

And no, Device Manager doesn't show any problems. And the critical system file scan didn't find any issues.
I installed VEW, but when I hit Run, it says "VEW has not been coded for your language (Finnish)". So apparently I can't run it at all, sadly.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that sometimes - rarely, but sometimes - even when I'm not video calling with my friend, my internet speed flunctuates and sometimes briefly goes to absolute garbage without any reason. But the video calls are the only thing during which it always slows down massively.
I don't know if this has anything to do with my issue, and I'm somewhat ok with it since it doesn't occur that often and usually my internet goes back to normal pretty fast, but I'll include my Speedtest results just to demonstrate this.

Around an hour ago, my internet slowed down to this:

4914247024.png

And right after that I scanned it again, and I got my normal results:

4914248907.png

And now, when I scan it, I get results like this:

 4914386238.png  4914395801.png

I find this really odd, because it cannot be because of my ISP either seeing as I get my normal speed, around 60 mb/s, if I plug my laptop straight to the wall with an ethernet cable.

Let's try MyEventViewer instead:

http://www.nirsoft.n...ent_viewer.html

Choose the download that applies to your system

.Download MyEventViewer  <== 32 bit

Download MyEventViewer for x64  <== 64 bit

. Don't worry about the language options

It's a zip file so you need to save it then right click and Extract All.  Find the MyEventViewer.exe and right click and run as admin.

Hit Ctrl 3 then Ctrl 4 then Ctrl  5 (that's the Ctrl button then the number.  This eliminates events we don't care about.)

now click on the first event.  Hit Ctrl  A to select all events.  Then File, Save Selected Items.  Put it on your desktop and call it events.  Open the file if it's not too big and copy and paste it to a reply or attach it if too big.

Your WiFi problem Sounds like interference from either a neighbor's router or something like a baby monitor or possibly even your webcam if it is going bad (have you tried it on a friend's computer?)  .  Let's check to see what other routers are on the same channel.  Get Netgear genie:

http://www.netgear.c...apps/genie.aspx

click on Download PC.  Save the file and then install it by right click and Run As Admin.

As the last step of the install it will run Netgear Genie.    (To run it at a later time you will need to right click and Run As Admin)  then click on WiFi Connection then on WiFi Channel. The blue column is your router.  Are there other routers on the same channel?  Note the channel your router is on and look for any unused or least used channels.  Even if there are no other routers on your channel it would not hurt to login to the router and change the channel to another clear channel as far from the original as possible.

I ran Netgear Genie, and apparently there's one router on channel 2 and 3 routers on channel 6. I use channel 11.
I did try to change my channel when I started having these problems (my old channel was 1, and I also tried 5 and 6), but changing it didn't help. I have an app on my phone that said channel 11 would be the best, so I've used it for some time now.

Have you tried the webcam on another PC?

The logs basically say you have some corruptions so I would run a disk check and then redo the search index:

.1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:

2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check,

Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

Rebuild the Search Index:

  1. Open Indexing Options by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, typeindexing options, and then click Indexing Options.

  2. Click Advanced18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  3. In the Advanced Options dialog box, click the Index Settings tab, and then click Rebuild18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_48. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Wait until tje indexing is done then Clear the alarms and let's see if we still have problems.Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs.  Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot

Then run MyEventViewer again as before.

Yes, in fact my webcam is around 4 years old already, and I normally used it on my home pc up until I got my laptop. So I haven't tested it on my pc for some weeks now, but it's always worked flawlessly.

Here's MyEventViewer's logs:

At this point I'd like to thank you so much for taking the time to help me. This issue has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks and I was so baffled when nothing seemed to help. I'll be so grateful if this eventually gets solved. :)

I doubt the desktop uses WiFi.  You need to check the webcam on a system that uses WiFi.  I'm starting to suspect that it is giving off interference that is messing with the WiFi.

This error has nothing to do with your problem but should be fixed in case of a dump.

Step 1: Create a paging file
  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click Advanced system settings on the System page, and then click the Advanced tab.
  3. Click Settings under the Performance area.
  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under the Virtual memory area.
  5. Select the system partition where the operating system is installed.

Note To enable the system partition, you have to click to clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.
  6. Set the value of Initial size and Maximum size to the amount of physical RAM that is installed plus 100 megabyte (MB) under theCustom Size button.
  7. Click Set, and then click OK three times.
  8. Restart Windows in order for your changes to take effect.

I can't test it on another computer right now unfortunately, but I can borrow my mother's laptop on the weekend and test my webcam on it, if that helps.

Just to remind you, everything worked flawlessly on my laptop before I reinstalled Windows 7. So I don't understand how I've suddenly started having massive issues with this when up until just two months ago everything worked fine.

Hey, sorry for being a bit late but I tested my webcam on my mother's laptop and it works flawlessly on it, just like it used to on my own laptop as well. No lag whatsoever when watching a film with my friend and having both our webcams on. The wifi at my parents is a lot slower than at my own place as well, but it still works much much better here than back at my place. The problem only seems to occur on my own laptop.
