OK tried and failed. Can't even access the bios now. What on earth could we be missing

That shouldn't have done anything to the BIOS.  Leave the CD connection loose.  You can remove the 3.3 volt lithium battery for 20 seconds and then put it back. That should restore the BIOS.

OK so as it stands... The new hard drive is plugged into where the CD used to be plugged into and the CD is unplugged completely. But the exact same thing. Blinking coursor. Can access bios though

I still think it has to be a BIOS option but if you can't find one then your only option would be to get a SATA drive.

 

Can you see a part number on the MOBO?  The BIOS is from Intel so perhaps the board is too.  At least they are still in business.

I see I see. Well unless I can fix it myself I will be looking at getting a new one tbh. Even if I did get another one though, I'd still like to get to the bottom of it. Its frustrating to think that its probably one setting away from being a functioning computer.

You say you need the serial number of the motherboard? Would it be on a corner or something?

Part number rather than serial number.
