Norton updated the virus definitions and I started getting a message that the system was infected with trojan.cachecachekit. I ran Norton and it couldn't fix the problem. I tried the instructions from the Symantec website several times and it didn't fix the problem. I tried on line scans, downloaded several malware checkers etc with no solution. I finally discovered your website and followed the instructions under the "start here" topic. I downloaded and ran all the recommended programs and "fixed" the problems. Norton no longer warned about trojan.cachecachekit and my system scanned clean on several occasions. But things are still strange. Some of the malware checkers seem to find the same problems each time they are run. For example this fivsec referrence keeps coming up. I instruct the program to delete or fix but the next time the checker runs it finds it again. Also I checked to make sure my Windows firewall was enabled and found out it's not. All of the boxes are grayed out and I cannot seem to turn the firewall on. In addition, when I tried to schedule the malware checkers to run via task scheduler a password request came up. It scheduled the task but it doesn't run as it wants a password from me. I have never set a password on this computer so I don't know why it wants one. I have saved the log files on the malware checkers that have that option if you need them.

Here is my hijack this log:

Hi southwestcharm

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Reboot into Safe Mode: Click here if you don't know how to do this.

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Run ewido fullscan save the log.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Reboot as normal

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!
http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage:
http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.
Reboot when prompted to let it clean out the remaining files.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

I already had AdawareSE professional installed. I did the update -none needed. Referred to the tutorial just to be sure I had the settings right - which I did as I had reset them from the "start here" file on this website. Also did the VX2 cleaner which said I was clean. After installing and running the VX2 cleaner, I began having a conflict between Adaware and Spybot S&D where they were picking up on each other and trying to block each other. I uninstalled spybot S&D through add/remove programs but it didn't remove it totally so I had to search for the S&D files and delete them manually. Then finished the instructions for safe mode, prefetch, ewido, cleanmgr, cleanup (which I had already installed and ran a couple of times in the last few days), and panda.

Here is the panda logfile:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows Registry
Adware:Adware/PopCapLoader No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.inf

Hi southwestcharm

Plese run this fix Savenow & whenu remover

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot.
Copy and Paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in where upon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.inf
Let the system reboot.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!: http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted the system will log off to let it clean out the remaining files. when the log screen shows log back on and continue the fix.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

I ran whenu remover and it said whenu was not detected on my system. I downloaded pocket killbox but what do I copy and paste into it?? (I was assuming that what whenu found would have been pasted there). Let me know.

I appreciate your help! :tazz:

WhenU remover found nothing.
Killbox deleted popcaploader.inf file.

Ran cleanup again - wow! the stuff it finds!

Ran pandasoft scan. Here's the logfile:

Incident Status Location
Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows
Registry
Ran housecall which found no infection.

Heres the HJT log:

I installed and ran Aimfix which deleted "winnite."
Jayloden recommended installing an ad blocking host file which I did however it seemed to conflict with spysubtract so I then removed it.

Jayloden also recommended installing Spybot S&D which I reinstalled.

I ran the following programs with these results:
Adaware found nothing
spybot found nothing
spysubtract found 1 cookie (com.com) which it removed + 1 CWS.msconfig file which it removed + 5 items from Effective I inc (in current version folder) which it removed.
Reran spysubtract and on second run it found nothing
Ewido found nothing
TDS stated no trojan mutexes found
xoftspy found nothing

Reran Pandascan which found nothing.

I ran cleanup again.

The computer restarted without problems.

I then ran HJT (log below). On looking through the log, I have questions on the following: AIM.exe is missing file and the zone.msn.com/bingame entries. Are those problems or potential problems?

I can't believe I had so many problems when I was using Norton and Adaware and thought I was protected. ;)

Here is my latest HJT log:

I have left the above malware/trojan/adware scanners on my system and have the automatic monitoring enabled on the ones that have it available. They seem to be working ok together. Any other advice?

I don't know how to thank you for your help! :tazz:

I think I discovered another problem and am not sure where it is from.

I ran the Symantec Security check which checks the security of your system. It indicated that the virus and windows environments were ok due to the presence of an updated virus checker and updated windows security patches. However it also indicated that a vulnerability may exist in the following areas:

Hacker exposure and trojan horse infiltration

The explanation was that three ports were open (#1 CMP ping, #22 SSH, and #2000 transscout/remote explorer)

The suggested fix was to install a firewall. I then discovered that the Windows XP firewall is disabled except for the local intranet. The boxes are "grayed" out so I cannot make any changes nor does the reset default button seem to work. Automatic updates was also turned off. (I was able to turn it back on and selected the notify me setting figuring it was the safest.) The security center indicated that it had not started or was stopped and that settings were controlled by group policy. I tried changing group policy to allow the security center to be active but that didn't work. I then changed the environment for the allowed access to my local intranet (subnet) only. We have a router that all computers are connected to which my son says acts as a firewall as well. I am still concerned. The other catch is that this system has two users set up. One is the administrator account and the other is my account which also has administrator privileges. The main administrator account won't let me access it as it wants a password. I do not remember putting a password in when XP was installed.

Could the router be interfering with the firewall or was it something that was done by the trojan? My son installed the router and he is away for a few days so I don't know what was done during the router setup. We are connected to the Internet via a cable modem.

Any ideas?
Also my computer seems really slow at opening windows now. Guess I'll rerun the scans....

Hi southwestcharm

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Service: AIM - Unknown owner
When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
O23 - Service: AIM - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe (file missing)
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Scan with HJT post a new log

I didn't find an AIM unknown owener entry when I went into Services.msc.
I had HJT fix the Aim unknown owner line and here is the new log:
