I figured out how to get in the administrator account. But I still can't change the Firewall settings. It keeps telling me that the Firewall/internet connection sharing service is not on. When I answer yes to the question if I want to turn on that service it then tells me that Windows cannot start the Firewall/ICS service. I ran a check on my internet connections and everything passed.

This is starting to drive me crazy!

What's your opinion on things?

I used killbox on the "Dwapilib.tlb."

I spoke to my son. He indicated that the router is not set up to interact with the computer. It is configured so that he can go in and manually open ports to access his computer here at home from work. Any open ports point to his Linex (spelling ??) computer. If an outsider requests information, the router forwards it to the Linex computer and supposedly nothing can happen. The router is a Dlink which was configured manually and acts as a firewall for our home network.

I checked the other computers on our home network and found out that they all have the firewall from Windows active. I noticed that my computer configuration on the network looked different from the other computers and questioned him about this. Apparently my settings had been changed and he instructed me on how to get back in the right workgroup for the home setup. Which I did.

He has no idea why my Windows firewall is turned off and the buttons are grayed out so I can't turn the firewall on. Nor does he have any idea why I have three open ports on my computer. He swears to me that it is not because of the router setup or anything he did.

The Windows firewall window indicates that the settings are controlled by group policy. I have spent some time reading help about group policy and it is very confusing to me.

I did go into the administrator account and found the services section under administrative tools. The Windows Firewall/ICS service item was listed as disabled and I enabled it to run automatically. Then I chose start and ok. The setting now reads started and automatic for the local system account but I still couldn't access turn on/off selection under the control panel/windows firewall area. The buttons continue to be grayed out and the setting is off. I then tried restarting the service under the administrative tools section. It looks like it's doing something, the task window disappears yet when I go back to Control Panel nothing has changed under Windows Firewall.

What do I do now? I saw an entry in the help section about resetting the security options to the defaults that were installed when XP was installed. But it said something about it might affect the way some programs run so I didn't do that.
