it doesn't even beep anymore. And the power button light doesn't come on

 

 

Typical signs of a bad PSU, a PSU puts out various voltages one of them being the 3.3V rail that supplies the DIMMs (the dual memory slots), there is no way of knowing this while the PSU is still powering up but the tell tale sign here is the power button light no longer coming on, your PSU is the flex type which are expensive and before doing anything else I would suggest that you have a local tech test the computer and PSU for you, some will do it for free and some charge a small fee so please check with them first.

Aha! So a bad PSU would also explain why the video doesn't come on?

 

Another little thing I noticed - when I plugged in a USB mouse, its red light flickered briefly, but then went out and stayed out. Wonder if that sounds like a bad PSU as well...

My canned below offers an explanation;

 

As a PSU puts out various voltages +3.3V, +5V and +12V it may appear that the PSU is working correctly but it is not, any significant drop of any output can prevent the system from booting up, the other scenario is a significant increase in the output which can be worse as it can fry one or more major components such as the MB, CPU, Ram, add on video card etc.

 

 

Having your PSU tested is about all that you can do at present.

Will do. And you're right, those PSUs are expensive. The cheapest new one on eBay is $49!

If it turns out that the PSU is bad and all other hardware ok it may be worth considering swapping your hardware into an alternative case that will accommodate a standard size ATX PSU, a budget case and better quality PSU will not cost you much more than a replacement Flex PSU.

Yep, that's pretty much the plan. I've all but given up on this case. But I really do appreciate all of your assistance in trying to diagnose the problem. I never like to give up on computers without at least TRYING to save them. But at a certain point, it stops being economically feasible...

Consider it a dead issue. I've already stripped all the known good parts out of the case and disposed of the rest. Life goes on. Thanks for checking.
