Hello Malcolm,

Speccy url worked ok  :thumbsup:

MSE needs to be fully uninstalled and not just disabled as the potential is still there for it to conflict.

Bit of a recap;

From my reply #2

The DELL 450 Workstation originally shipped with XP meaning that the Dell Utility Partition must have been reinstalled at some point, is that correct.

From your reply #7

I did, a few days ago, reload the Windows 7 OS

Your screenshots in reply #5 and Speccy only show the one partition (C:) which is where Windows 7 is, there is no evidence of a Dell Utility Partition, can I ask how Windows 7 was reinstalled, was it from a Windows 7 disk or a back up image that you created yourself.

JAFYI: I have encountered such behaviour before and also with a Dell, after having to replace a faulty HDD the computer would only boot after F2 had been pressed, this was either because the Dell BIOS did not recognise the new HDD or because the original XP OS had been replaced with Windows 8, your C: partition is labelled as XP which may suggest that a Custom Install of Windows 7 was done and the without reformatting your drive or partition option was selected, if this was the case there should be a Windows.old folder, to check if there is;

Click the Start button and then click Computer.
Double-click the drive that Windows is installed on (the C: drive).
Check for a Windows.old folder.

Evening Phil, Re your last message: I reinstalled Windows 7 from a DELL disc, but that was only last week ( in desperation). The only other software loaded in the last month or so was the Bullguard AV. I have now uninstalled it and reactivated the Windows AV.

I have checked for the Windows.old file and it is present on the C drive.

Regards Malcolm

Evening Malcolm,

I reinstalled Windows 7 from a DELL disc,

A Dell disk that is not intended for use on this particular computer, as previously mentioned the computer originally shipped with XP Pro (Windows 2000 Pro or Red Hat) and the disk that has been used will not have the old Dell drivers on it and what is most likely happening is that generic Windows drivers are being used, see if Dell provides Windows 7 drivers for your machine, you can use the facility here to do this. please note that you must install the drivers in a set order else you will get issues, this perhaps is what is going on here due to missing or incorrect chipset drivers being used, for help with this see here

Hello Malcolm,

RE my reply #18,

Evening Malcolm,

Have you checked Dell for Windows 7 drivers for the computer and if available installed them in the correct order.

Hi Phil, I am getting no where with this, DELL say they do not support Windows 7 on this computer (yet its been working for several months). So I have this pm bought a another later version Dell computer with Win 7 already on it. It only cost £55 with a better spec. No contest! Its not worth yours or my time pursuing this fault. Its been interesting and I have learnt a few things from you for which I am grateful. Thanks for your time and patience. Regards Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

What a bargain, computer and OS for £55  :thumbsup:

Know what you mean about lack of support from Dell, unfortunately support from OEM brands in the main does tend to be poor  :(

You are most welcome btw and thank you for the follow up  :)
