For some reason, Windows XP is taking forever to load the desktop. There is little or no activity on the hard drive for a minute or more and I cant bring up the task manager using alt ctrl del to view the processes or performance of my computer until everything loads; and then for about a second it says my computer is at 100% then everything is okay........until I'm done using the computer and I want to shut down and then it says devldr is closing. I press the button to close it but when I click shut down or restart, nothing happens. I try bringing up the task manager but it doesn't come up anymore and then I resort to pressing and holding the power button.

Have you recently changed or added anything to your computer?

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Your log is clean. <_<

Your problem could be a driver issue. Make sure you've run Windows Update and installed any driver updates available. Also, you could try visiting mfg sites to download the latest XP drivers for all your hardware.

Finally, if you had corruption in Windows 98 that may have carried over to XP when upgrading. The best option is to do a clean install.
