Thank you guys for your replies.  I seems that I have a lot of study ahead of me.  I'll also look for some YouTube video tutorials that cover the subject. Go to the full post »

see how to create volumes here :- https://wiki.freenas..._FreeNAS_Volume

after re-reading your last post i think what you may want to do is use data sets or zvol to separate your data. see if this link better helps you learn about managing your storage space. :- http://doc.freenas.o...s_storage.html#

sorry never used zfs or freenas myself so have no detailed advice on best practise or how i'd set things up.

here's an extra link that i think will better help you understand the zfs filesystem freenas uses and explains how it's used. :- http://arstechnica.c...ystem-on-linux/

I, like terry1966, haven't used zfs, so can't give specific instructions.   It would be very unwise not to use at least raid1, (mirrored), as a failed disk, especially 6TB, would be catastrophic.

There are some good tutorials, but most assume you have a basic knowledge of Freenas and cam leave you overwhelmed.

I would subsribe to a site, like below, and hope that someone will walk you though sorting any problems you get.
