Good morning.

I've managed to get the serial port card going now :)

I'm having some trouble downloading the drivers for the audio card though,  It appears to be a CMEDIA CM18738-LX or MX and the drivers ='mght' be here: http://www.cmedia.co...er_Detail2.html

I'm not entirely sure why but I can't persaude the driver to download.  A web search finds the drivers in plenty of un-officlal sites but I am wary of these because of potetnial malware payloads coming with it.  COuld you advise me how to proceed please?

Thank you

Looks like that needs a login which is a tad unusual for a manufactures site...  I will see if I can find it some where else that is safe

I tried going through the login process but it didn't seem to make any difference.  Appreciate the assistance.

I am currently uploading the driver to this link https://dl.dropboxus...7-RC-01)_SX.zipit will be a few minutes.

I downloaded it from a driver site I trust but to be sure I scanned it to death as well :)

That worked a treat and iss very much appreciated.  I've burned it to CD and put in in the box with all the other firmware etc. that relates to this machine.

I think I am veyr nearly there but I think I still have one remaining problem.  When I was initially trying to get the machine running, I loaded the Intel XHCI USB drivers and my keyboad, mouse and everything else conected to USB ports stopped working.  Fortunately, on my earlier experiences, I had created a restore point so I re-booted into Safe Mode and reverted back to that and everything then came back to life.

I had originally downloaded the drivers from the Intel web site so, thinking I had inadvertently downloaded the wrong ones, I went to the MSI site (it's an MSI MOBO) and downloaded from here: https://www.msi.com/...-driver&Win7 64

Unfortunately, the outcome was the same and I'm curently awaiitng a return to the same restorei point and be able to use my mouse and keyboarrd again.

Any suggestions?  If i wasn't for the fact that I back up quite large volumes of data on external USB 3 HDDs I wouldn't worry about it.

Any suggestions?  I'm really, really  sorry  this has turned into something of an epic.

I've managed to make some progress with this...I think.

Running out of ideas, I wanted to see what, if any, options for USB were available in BIOS.  The only options were on/off and legacy support DISABLED/ENABLED or AUTO.  It was set to ENABLED.  I started wondering what that really meant....and spent some time investigating online.  I then changed the setting to AUTO, rebooted, installed the XHCI drivers and to my pleasant surprise, eveyrthing came up, all USB devices started working and all appeared generally good in my very small world.

I'm still not 100% convinced that the USB 3.0 attached devices are working at proper speed but I'm going to do some digging and see if I can prove that one way or another.  I've been sodding about with this for a week now and will admit to a little paranoia.  Will report back later.

Well, using TeradCopy, I've seen speeds of up to 97MB/s copying a large file to my external USB HDD.  I think suggests that the port is working as USB 3.0?

Indeed, I've learned a lot.  It's not quite the same as the 6800 development environement I started on!  I haven't had any professional involvement with computer hardware for maybe 25 years.

I think we're done bar me taking another system image and getting all the backups going again.  Thank you so much for your help with this.  It really is much appreciated.  I wouldn't have gotten back to where I am now without your help, support and patience.

Cheers

Denis
