You are not going to believe what just happened to me.  I updated my bios as per instructions on installing my new 980ti.  Was going to update everything anyways.  Well an error occurred during transfer and there is no backup BIOS. I called the company and they said its completely broke and can't access UEFI. So they are sending me a new one. I am considering selling it and going with another MOBO. If I don't can't I use a 2.0x4 and get  about 1.4Gb/s according to that article? If I go with a new MOBO what would you guys recommend with my parts? Is the Asrock Extreme 6 the only one that would fit my cpu etc?

I just read iammys reply and thank you it explained very well all my questions. And as far as the windows it was just a trial I am taking it off anyways.  So tell me this since my MOBO is gone and I have to buy a new one or they are replacing it since it is not my fault do I have to buy a new windows?  The reason I was getting this new hardrive besides needing more space was to upgrade from 8.1 to Windows 10.  When I load up a new MOBO will windows give me a problem even though it already on the system, or hard drive?

"So is there a possibility of doing 2.0x4 or something else to increase the speed without hampering the video card?"

No.   The  PCIe ver. 2.0 has a limited bandwidth so achieves x2, the 950 Pro needs the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0 to achieve x4.

Use Option 1 and if no satisfactory, change to option 3.

think that should be yes, the x2 or x4 is the number of pci-e lanes used so in an adapter in the 2nd pci-ex16 slot you will get 2.0x4 speeds.

quote from earlier post of motherboard specs.

1x PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (PCI_E4 , supports x4 speed)

sorry to hear about your motherboard problems but as long as the replacement motherboard is the same then you shouldn't have a problem with your installed windows os booting as usual when it's swapped because it will use the same drivers already installed on the drive.

any z97 motherboard with more than one 3.0x16 (x4 or more lanes) pci-e slot will give you the full speed of the 950 pro when used in an adapter. eg. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813128716

again though i'm not 100% sure if you can use it as a boot drive that way, depends on other things like bios/uefi.

the only option that i know it definitely works as a boot drive with z97 chipset motherboards at full speed is the z97 asrock extreme 6 motherboard with it's 3.0x4 m2 slot that iammykyl linked to.

Well I am glad that I will not have to buy a new windows but I decided to buy the z97 asrock extreme 6 to use both.  Unfortunately now I am worried about the windows factor.  The guy at MSI said they might not have that same MOBO and if not might have to give me an upgraded version which would cause the Windows problem again.  I wanted to go to Windows 10.  So you think if I explained my story about the MOBO they will allow me to upgrade?  With my main computer I would like to have everything legit but I am buying a new video card, MOBO, Hard Drive and now windows!! lol. That is a little much.  I appreciate all of you guys' advice. What would you recommend about the fact that I am getting a new MOBO and windows situation?

Gday.

We need to clarify some points before looking at activation options.

Are you defiantly going to buy the Asrock MB and try to sell whatever board you get from MSI.?

Was the original computer a pre built one that came with an installation disc?

Do you have an activation Product key?

Have you removed the "trial" install on the other computer?

Do you have important Date on the broken computer you want to save? if yes, do not disassemble it yet.

"If I go with a new MOBO what would you guys recommend with my parts? Is the Asrock Extreme 6 the only one that would fit my cpu etc"

Most Z97 MBs would work, many have an M.2 x2 slot, including the lower end Asrock, but as far as I know, only the Asrock Extreme6 and higher have a M.2 x4 slot, which you will need for hassle free use of the 950 Pro.  I have an Asrock Exreme4.

With regards to W10 free upgrade.   Whether you have an existing W7/8,0/8.1, or a clean reinstall, or a new install, you will still get pestered to upgrade to W10, free, until the end of June/July.

If you would like to try a repair/salvage the BIOS on the bricked MB, please have a read and let us know. > http://www.biosflash...date-method.htm

If this method was used and failed, BIOS-Update with built-in BIOS Flash tool

try  BIOS-Update per bootable USB-Stick (DOS), if no good,

Go down the page, > Read more... #3 and #4.

Your BIOS iis type AMI, use/download version 1.7https://www.msi.com/....html#down-bios

Ok so I bought the Asrock Extreme 6 installed it and no problems with windows. I called cyberpower PC who I bought the PC fro and I have the Windows 8.1 code so I can install it to another drive or computer with a new MOBO.  The 950 Pro is on its way so I should be set in a few days.  Installing a new PSU, a GTX 980ti, and MOBO was a time consuming but pleasantly not a difficult task.  I really appreciate both of your comments.  I used to help a lot of people on Toms Hardware but their staff were jerks. Iammykyl I appreciate your knowledge and time you took to help me out , it was invaluable. I may switch over to this site to help out others. Again to both of you a big thanks.

That's great news Luke.

Before installing the 950 Pro, download the latest Samsung Magician, Download the Latest driver and save to the Desktop, burn it to a USB stick.   Windows Generic SSD drivers, (950 Pro) is a bit flaky, so during the Windows install, when you get to the F6 method to install 3rd party drivers, plug in the USB stick and point to it, remove the USB stick before proceeding with the rest of the Windows install.

Thanks, and you are very welcome     Been a pleasure to help and I learned a bit along the way as well.

Post back with any question and of course the final results would be appreciated.

Yes, do switch, as we always need good volunteers  .
