Hey Len, well you will need a pretty good graphics card, however there are two types. One type is for gaming like a Radeon X800 while the other is for the professional kind of people like Pixar (spelling) people who make shrek and stuff. If you are not really going to be making high end stuff like that then a good gaming card will do however animation takes a lot of RAM and also you will need a fast hard drive.

Somehow beginner, and developing animation and games don't seem like they belong in the same sentence. How old is your son?Looking for some help on buying a computer for a beginner, developing animation and games.
Actually, you'll probably find the most expensive thing is the software (like Maya or 3dsMax). 3D animation rendering takes a lot of CPU power, and RAM. You'll want at least a Pentium4 2.8ghz+, with a minimum of 512MB of RAM. The video card isn't terribly important, but he'll probably want to play some games on it to, so I'd go for a mid-level card--defiantly not integrated video. An AMD64 system would probably be ideal, but Dell doesn't offer them.
Professionals prefer a CRT screen over flat panel because they render colors more accurately. Also many use a dual monitor setup, so they can display their tools on one monitor, and the output on the other.
