When i run the recovery console and select R, it puts me into C:\> only. I can't do cd operation into C:\Windows. All this occurred after shutting down an external hard drive without first dismounting it. After attempting to run fixmbr, a message appeared that indicated the mbr was non-standard or corrupt. It then asked to continue and that there was danger that the system would become inaccessible. So I declined the procedure. Bootcfg /rebuild would not fire and I can't boot into safe mode either because of the hal.dll missing error message. Before that it was ntldr missing error.

Just curious if ten dollar bill tried FixBoot before using UBCD.

Try using the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD), download it from either a friends computer, or maybe your spare(if you have one), and burn it onto a CD. You will need to have access to your original windows disk, or an image to fully use it. Boot into it, through your bootup options, and run the scandisk program in your disk menu folder. Hopefully this will do a thorough scan of your drive, and repair any corrupted system files. Been here, and it fixed a badly corrupted system boot drive.

1. Enter fixboot c: and press ENTER (where c: is the drive letter assigned to the partition to have the boot sector rewritten.

The XP start up disk does not detect an installed hdd. Also the mobo bios detects the dvd drive but no hard drive. Appears my Corsair sata 120gb SSD  is dead. Will attempt to restore the drive image back up to a new hdd.
