Hi Phil, thanks for digging around.
The HP Advisory seems to be related to a different model HDD (not used in this model laptop) though. That's not to say that it couldn't occur in other models, of course.
The new HDD has been working fine since installing it in the laptop. It's really weird that I got a SMART error when it was hooked up through USB, though.
I was satisfied with the HDD overall, and I think I'm just going to accept that it's the wine that did it.
Thanks for all of your help. If anything comes up in the future, I'll report back.

Aye I reckon HP would have corrected the known issue for later drives and was just letting you know that there had been similar issues in the past, as for the wine being the cause, hard to say for sure and hopefully you will not have any further issues and perhaps consider it as being a gremlin in the system that has now been corrected.
