A quick, cheap and easy solution would be to use a USB hard drive dock, something like one of these: http://www.newegg.co...N=-1&isNodeId=1 I personally own a Rosewill USB 3 dock and... Go to the full post »

Hi

First post... it's been a while since I've been active on a forum! I'm hoping to call this home & find some like minded people!

Anyway, I'm trying to build a home server (win server 2007) & I've retrieved a spare PC I had lying around. But it's one of those crappy cases that lie flat on it's side, so it's not very big & space is such an issue with it. I have 3 HDD's I want to add to it but I can just about get 2 in.

Now I do have spare cases, but they're up in the loft & well to be honest, I'm lazy to go through the hassle of finding them amongst all the other stuff up there!

I was hoping for some creative suggestions on how I can incorporate a 3rd HDD. In the past I would just sort of have one hanging out the side of my case... resting on a piece of foam. But as this will be a constant running server, I thought it best not to do that. I'm also looking for a bit of DIY here, I don't want to buy a SSD, as I have so many spare HDD's I'd like to make use of.

Thanks  :yeah:

How are you planning on using the 3rd hard drive on the server, as a separate disk or as part of a RAID setup etc?

I personally own a Rosewill USB 3 dock and it works great, however I have noticed with these devices that they can occasionally need disconnected/reconnected every few weeks, so if 100% up-time is a concern you may want to go a different route. But for a cheap and easy solution this is a pretty good option.
