With W8.1 and Firefox ... I want to save my downloads in my desktop folder. I followed these instructions but could not see the OK button (referenced in last step).

For Mozilla Firefox:

  • Click the chrome-menu.png button (upper-right corner) and select Options.
  • In the General tab find the Downloads section and check Save files to.
  • Click Browse, Navigate to the Desktop and click Select Folder.
  • Click OK and the Window will close.

From now on your downloads should be saved directly to the desktop

.Can someone please tell me where the OK button is? Thanks. batpark

There is no OK button. Those instructions may be wrong anyway.

Firefox 42.0

You don't click the hambuger: click on the cog wheel icon to the left of it.
Then a new tab will open up with the Firefox preferences.
Choose where to save your downloaded files OR choose the "Always ask me where to save files" radio button instead

Any changes you make are immediately saved - there is no OK or Cancel button.

I have Firefox version 44.0.2 installed and I have no OK button either. I do believe they did away with the OK button a few updates ago.

Have you tried downloading anything to see if it downloads to the desktop?

DonnaB: Thanks. I will try your suggestion.

But just to be sure I understand (I am a novice) .... would you please say just what "download to desktop means?" Is "deskop" just a folder name for a folder in C:\? Or is it a physical screen? If the latter, suppose I download an app QQQQ; what would I see ( an entry in a listing or an icon) and where would i see it? ...batpark

Yes, the Desktop is just a folder from the point of view of downloads.

They changed the position of the options between 43.0.1 and 42 ... in 43 you do click the hamburger and the options cog is in that menu.  But not in 42.

In 44, again the options cog is in the hamburger menu, so that's a change between 42 and later versions.

Firefox tries to make things simpler for you by giving the folders their snappy, user-friendly names.  "Desktop" means the folder pointed to by C:\Users\username\Desktop (where 'username' is the name of your user folder).

Try changing it and quitting Firefox.  Then run up Firefox again and go to the same settings page - it should retain the setting you have it.  Changes are immediately saved as soon as you make them (no OK or Cancel buttons).
