A hard drive had to be replaced in a dell laptop   When I purchased the laptop, it came with a recovery dvd.  Everything went well as far as reloading the OS, etc.   Problem now though is it does not want to download all the updates that had been lost.  It has been going on and on for about six hours.  Is there a fix for this?

Hi Janis,

There could be any number of reasons for this, but a possible cause is that it needs more time!

There could be well over 200 or more updates involved with several Gigabytes of data to download and install and many reboots when extra updates will often become available.

Depending on the speed of your download connection it could take several days to complete...so 6 hours is not very long at all!

Presumably you have installed the latest chipset, video, and network drivers as a first thing before trying Windows update?

Regards
