Hello,

 

I'm wondering if anyone has had this trouble and can help.

I am new to Windows 8 and have recently purchased an Asus N550JK. The touch screen worked for the first day and then stopped. After that, I even reset the laptop to original out of box condition and it didn't work.

A few days later, after trying everything I could find, it actually worked for another day, but just for 1 day! It has again stopped working and the touch keyboard isn't starting with Windows any longer, and I can't find any clues of touch abilities in the device manager.

In system, it says "no pen or touch input is available for this display."

After searching and reading this board and a few others, plus YouTube and Google, I can't find anything more to try. I'm stuck and need some help.

I spoke with Asus and they offered no troubleshooting but immediately said I'd have to RMA this new laptop for anywhere between $130-$300. That's messed up and not going to happen 010.png

 

I'm beginning to think the answer to my problem is called Windows 7!

If you did not purchase the notebook direct from ASUS I would take this up with the person or store from where it was obtained as it clearly is not fit for purpose, there are a couple of variants of the N55JK and from reading reviews at Newegg I can tell you that most negative reviews are due to screen issues and failures, see here

Unless you already have a Windows 7 disc and unused product key this will cost you a fair amount of cash and has the potential to void your warranty, the former is unfair because you have already paid  for Windows 8.1 and the latter gives ASUS reason to decline any RMA because you have downgraded the OS to one not supported by ASUS as in they only provide drivers for 64-bit Windows 8.1 and 64-bit Windows 10.

 

On the outside chance that this is related to the present OS or ASUS drivers etc what you could do is try upgrading to Windows 10 and see if the issue is still present, if it is you can roll back to Windows 8.1 (as long as it is done within 30 days of the upgrade) and then take up your warranty claim.

Ugh. Windows 10 is never going to be an option for me and if Win7 is going to void the warranty then maybe it really is time for me to go full Linux, with or without the touchscreen. Wonder how often I'd use it, anyway.

 

I'll start by contacting the place I purchased it from. Thanks again, I appreciate your help and insight!

Contacting the place of purchase really is your best option tbh, good luck with it and let us know what they say if you will.

 

JAFYI: If you have or were able to borrow a windows 7 disk you could try it out, as long as there is a working Windows 8.1 recovery partition on the computers HDD that you could use if Windows 7 didn`t work out, some reading for you here

I've been wondering about this since 8 doesn't come with installation media. If I install another OS, like 7 or Linux, would I have to install as dual boot? I'd hate to format this thing, make things worse and then can't get the original OS back.

 

Oh, I heard back from the seller. I can return it for a refund or warranty it through Asus. I'm thinking the touchscreen isn't that big of a deal to me!

Setting up a dual boot would involve a bit of work and with OEM brands it tends to more involved because they don`t take the time to install Windows on it`s own partition and have a data only partition separate, if this is the case here, to set up a dual boot you would need to shrink the C: partition that Windows is on down to say 200GB to be on the safe side as in to allow for all future updates to be installed to etc, the space freed up should then be split into two partitions, a smaller one for Linux if that is what you opt for** and the larger one for storing your data to.

 

** If you opt for a Windows 7 dual boot with 8.1 the HDD would need to formatted first + you would need Windows 8.1 media so that you can do a fresh install, this is because the older OS needs to be installed first, rather than me waffle on about the reasons why take a look at the Microsoft article here head straight to the Cause paragraph to save wading through the whole lot, something else to keep in mind with Windows 8 onwards is the UEFI BIOS, secure boot needs to be disabled to boot from a USB device.

 

The seller seems a decent sort and tbh the final call is yours to make as you are the one that has to potentially return the notebook and then shop around for a new one, if me, I would return it as I expect to get what I have paid for and not for faulty goods, keep in mind that this could just be the start of worse to come issues.

That's a lot of information to digest, I appreciate the help. I would definitely be going Linux on the dual boot as my time with Windows is coming to a close. I'll come to a decision on this one, whether to keep or return it. After applying all 1700+MB of Win8 updates, everything is working as I had hoped. I've got a bit more time to run it through some ringers and see if I can expose any other potential hardware issues as you've pointed out. Thanks again for your time!!
