Hi Dakeyras

1. I had updated firefox but just had not restarted firefox to complete the process at that time.( The great firewall in china somehow makes opening geekstogo very...very slow ( all of 5 minutes+), so easier to post then close and reopen the page. i think thats because its somehow connect with google ( When opening the page i see at the bottom lefthand corner the tiny window saying google.com when opening the page...and google is blocked in china)
2. Removed panda security toolbar, upon completion it asked if I wanted to uninstall panda url filtering, i agreed.
3. On the question of panda antivirus. I use to have AVG but it seemed to take up alot of memory for this old PC, thinking all the other major ones would be designed for more updated PC’s, I searched for one that was”lite” on filehippo and selected panda.Perhaps you could suggest a better antivirus if panda is not upto scratch.
4. My PC still wont read my ipad. It simply doesnt acknowledge that it has been plugged in. Both usb seem to work well with my mouse cable or other usb, and my ipad cable is working fine.

Hi. :)

On the question of panda antivirus. I use to have AVG but it seemed to take up alot of memory for this old PC, thinking all the other major ones would be designed for more updated PCs, I searched for one that waslite on filehippo and selected panda.Perhaps you could suggest a better antivirus if panda is not upto scratch.

Panda Free Antivirus is fine to leave installed. The actual Panda Security Toolbar is not actually part of the aforementioned software regardless the name does suggest such.

My PC still wont read my ipad. It simply doesnt acknowledge that it has been plugged in. Both usb seem to work well with my mouse cable or other usb, and my ipad cable is working fine.

Try the advise in the following support article please; If iTunes doesnt recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Hi Dakeyras

1. Viola, good news, ipad connected, so thank you for that, that's a big relief.

2. After yesterdays fixlist, i must admit the pc is running slow again (compared to the previous two days), there is a delay in pages/folder/websites opening, anything I go to double click there a 20-30 second delay before it “highlights the folder” then opens it slowly. E.g. if im in a program (wps, or txt, etc) and I select file, edit or any action button or i go to start button and i click, delay then execution. Happened 3-4 times in last 24hrs that explore windows freeze or hang and then slowly minimize like a curtain going down.

3. Firefox is the same as the above, opening pages is very very slow, since yesterday.

4. I have a few additional questions if you dont mind and excuse any ignorance. Using this opportunity to really clean out the pc,as all i need is an office suite(wps), a universal video payer, adobe to open pdf files, and itune and program to transfer video from pad to pc (iMacsoft iPhone Photo to PC Transfer). After the problems loading SP3 and having to reload driver (I loaded all the ones on the site not sure if I needed them or not - the ones i mention i dnt recall having in the past)

4.1 in add/remove programs do I need the following or can i remove them.

1 broadcom 4400 10/100 integrated
2 Conexant d480 mdc v.02 modem
3. Crash tool analysis
4. Dell driver reset tool
5. Dell resource CD
6. Dell wireless wlan card ( i ask since there is a intel pro set wireless that i recognize)
7. Digital line detect
8. Mouse suit for laptop
9. Sonic dla
10. Texas instrument pci xx20 drivers
11. LAV filters
12. Quicktime (now that one, if in the add/remove but no option to remove. And I have deleted it from program files manually but its still appears)

4.2 In windows task manager I notice the list has grown and here are a few things i dnt recognize.

Wltry.exe
Dot1xcfg.exe (two appear)
Igfxper.exe
Mscntfy.exe
Igfxsrvc.exe
Ico.exe
Ipodservice.exe
Dlg.exe
Wlkeeper.exe
Rundll32.exe
Bcmwltry.exe
wltrysvc.exe

4.3 in c:/ sf/application data..can i delete these (keep or delete?)

1. Panda security URL filtering ( as yesterday when i removed toolbar it asked if i wanted to remove this, which i agreed but it still on here)
2. Baidu/ wifihotspot
3. Baidu security
4. Ibimobiledevice
5. Oracle/java (RKinner advised i remove all java files but i see i still have some)
6. Sun/java

4.4 c:/ all users/application data (keep or delete?)

1. 188f1421-103a.....x86
2. Boffcdd9-5261......x86
3. Baidu
4. Bidu security
5. Oracle/java
6. Panda device agent
7. RP data
8. Sun/java
9. Thunder networks
10. DRM

4.5 In windows/system32 should there be so many files in this folder?

4.6 Right in the beginning of this process I removed real player and real alternative, i see in the last additional FRST that there are two hidden files (Real Alternative 2.0.2 (HKLM\...\RealAlt_is1) (Version: 2.0.2 - ) RealUpgrade 1.1 (Version: 1.1.0 - RealNetworks, Inc.) Hidden

Again excuse the excessive questions and thank you for your patience in helping me and this “ol faithful”. Hope you having a good day!!!!

Hi. :)

2. After yesterdays fixlist, i must admit the pc is running slow again (compared to the previous two days),

Nothing in the custom FRST script would account of this occurrence, though do bare in mind anything Apple related in use memory wise and the age of the machine/dire specifications are always going to be problematic I'm afraid from time to time. Also the actual hard-drive itself is still in need of further Maintenance/Repair as I mentioned in post #75 and this will affect performance also.

Anyway no harm trying the below to check if improves performance...

StartUpLite:

Please download this small application from here and save to the desktop.

It is very simple to use and quite effective and will advise about any unnecessary system startups that can be safely removed.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Please download TFC to the desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of the GUI(graphical user interface).
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next:

4.1 in add/remove programs do I need the following or can i remove them.

Fine to uninstall the below if you do not plan on using a dial up connection in the future(2 & 7)... The other two are not required at all(10 & 11).

2 Conexant d480 mdc v.02 modem

7. Digital line detect

10. Texas instrument pci xx20 drivers

11. LAV filters

12. Quicktime (now that one, if in the add/remove but no option to remove. And I have deleted it from program files manually but its still appears)

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and save it to the desktop.
  • Double-click msicuu2.exe to install the utility.
  • Next, click Start >> All Programs >> Windows Install Clean UP
  • Once the program is open; select the below by clicking on it to highlight:
QuickTime (If present)

Any other entry relating to software applications no longer installed.
  • Now click Remove, then click OK
  • Reboot your computer.
Note: Once used feel free to uninstall if you so wish.

Next:

4.2 In windows task manager I notice the list has grown and here are a few things i dnt recognize.

All legitimate and can be checked here for future reference.

4.3 in c:/ sf/application data..can i delete these (keep or delete?)

Fine to delete all mentioned.

4.4 c:/ all users/application data (keep or delete?)

Fine to delete all apart from:

6. Panda device agent

4.5 In windows/system32 should there be so many files in this folder?

Aye and more so now since the upgrade to SP3.

Use the aforementioned Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove those if still present.

Next:

Again excuse the excessive questions and thank you for your patience in helping me and this ol faithful. Hope you having a good day!!!!

Not a problem/you're most welcome and like wise...Congratulations your computer appears to be malware free!

Clean-Up with DelFix:

Please download DelFix to the desktop.
  • Double-click on delfix.exe to launch the application.
  • Referring to the image below, select the three options denoted:
DF2.gif
  • Then click on Run.
  • Once it has finished processing, a notepad file named DelFix.txt will open. Post the contents in your next reply for my review.
  • The log can also be located at the root of the system drive, C:\DelFix.txt.
  • After you have posted the aforementioned DelFix.txt, delete it and empty the Recycle Bin.
Note: The above application/overall process will flush old System Restore points and create a new clean one. It should also clean up and remove the vast majority of scanners used and logs created etc.

Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.

Hi Dakeyras

First and foremost a very big thank you to you and Rkinner for patiently and systematically walking me through this process and answering my question, especially this being such an old pc. Truly a wonderful site and my sincere appreciation.

Last few questions to end this process.

1. In my C:/ driver there are a number of loose files, not the main folders ( im attaching a pic) do i just leave them or delete them.

2. Can I delete
2.1 spsetup.exe
2.2 VEW.exe
2.3 Procexp.exe

3. In the article regarding pc security. Do you advise that I add a program from each heading and if so do I just pick one where they have multiple options?

3.1 Online armor firewall (do I use this with windows Firewall?)
3.2 Anti malware (ill use malwarebytes)
3.3 Host (mvps, HPhost, blocklist),
3.4 Sandbox (sandboxie, safespace)
3.5 Online antivirus scanner ( I see that they include panda active scan amongst e-sat, house call, f-secure)

4. Regarding the need for further maintenance/repair (post 75), how many ties do i need to this this now and then how often should I do this?

5. To for my own surety, do i continue to keep all programs upto date or when downloading programs, always downloading latest version considering im still using xp? E.g firefox, itunes, etc

Thank you again

Hi. :)

First and foremost a very big thank you to you and Rkinner for patiently and systematically walking me through this process and answering my question, especially this being such an old pc. Truly a wonderful site and my sincere appreciation.

Acknowledged/you're welcome!

2. Can I delete

Aye fine to delete all three mentioned.

3. In the article regarding pc security. Do you advise that I add a program from each heading and if so do I just pick one where they have multiple options?

No need for the below:-

3.1 Online armor firewall (do I use this with windows Firewall?) <-- Your machine just does not have enough system memory currently installed and making use of the SP3 Firewall and your Routers inbuilt hardware firewall is fine for what you intend to use the machine for.

3.3 Host (mvps, HPhost, blocklist), <-- Well worth using. I do myself on all my own machines and son's etc. Basically a custom Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website. So a custom Hosts file will replace your current MS default Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new custom Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

3.4 Sandbox (sandboxie, safespace) <-- Your call though being honest not something I have personally ever used and or advised about.

3.5 Online antivirus scanner ( I see that they include panda active scan amongst e-sat, house call, f-secure)

You could consider adding the Mozilla FireFox add-on Bitdefender QuickScan. Actually use this one myself and fine for what is it /second opinion so to speak. Just run it say twice per month for example.

4. Regarding the need for further maintenance/repair (post 75), how many ties do i need to this this now and then how often should I do this?

A further two times should suffice and then say once per month. I would also consider re-downloading TFC(Temp File Cleaner). As it is a very effective piece of software for cleaning out temp' files etc with say XP.

5. To for my own surety, do i continue to keep all programs upto date or when downloading programs, always downloading latest version considering im still using xp? E.g firefox, itunes, etc

Aye would be prudent to do so as long as the machine has internet access.

One last thing, after I reboot I get two windows opening, both hardware wizard asking to install mass storage controller and pci modem, how do I remove this, thanks

I would allow the former as for the latter, no need since you do not intend using the dial up modem so to remove the prompt:

Stopping the Windows XP Found New Hardware Wizard

Scroll down the page to First, left-click on the Start Button, then follow this route and follow the instructions to remove the PCI Modem etc.
