Hello!

I am having a problem with a laptop that I have to recommission for someone. The Windows 7 that is on the laptop currently is "messed up", that's my tech speak, for it constantly gets BSOD's and other errors. So I want to install a fresh copy of Windows 7, that they gave me, on this laptop. 

But.....I cannot find any way to boot from CD. I have tried the common keys like DEL, F1, F2, F8, F10, F12. I have gone into the BIOS, and I do not see any options for Boot options in the ancient BIOS. 

 

The laptop is an ancient Toshiba  L665-S5156

 

I have looked at similar problems, for example on this guide

but the BIOS doesn't have the options mentioned in this solution,

On that particular notebook accessing the boot options should be by pressing the F12 key when you see the Toshiba splash screen and then using the arrow keys to highlight the device/s that you want.

 

Have you checked for a recovery partition by holding down the 0 (zero) key when you power up the notebook.

Thank you phillpower2. I have tried that, I chose CD/DVD, but all I get is a black screen, with a cursor blinking in the upper left hand corner. I hear the DVD drive working, but nothing happens for a few minutes, and then finally, Windows takes me back to a screen that says Windows recovery mode or something of that matter.

 

I tried to restore to a previous restore point, but there are no restore points. That's why I want to re-install windows.

I found how to get around my problem, I mounted a windows iso from the microsoft site to a USB, and installed that way. Problem solved

Sounds like the dvd drive may be faulty, or dirty lens

or even a bad disk

If you have not yet done so, starting with the chipset reinstall the Toshiba drivers and then test the optical drive.
