Help!  We have been using my late step-mothers Win7 PC for almost two years now without ever having to have a password to get in.  Suddenly after a power outage a few nights ago it is demanding a password and won't let us in?!?!?!  There is no way to use the computer as a "guest" either.

Is there some way we can regain access to her pictures, files and email contacts or are we SOL?

Thanks!

Grieving Family

:welcome:   nl1moore,

Is there some way we can regain access to her pictures, files and email contacts or are we SOL?

It may be possible to access the pictures and files without booting into Windows but not email contacts.

As per the GTG Terms of Use assistance in bypassing passwords is not permitted;

BIOS or Operating System's passwords are there for the purpose related to Security and Privacy to protect the legitimate owner of a machine. While there are many locations on the Internet that might help you learn about managing passwords for a machine's BIOS or Operating System, we a G2G do not assist in what amounts to hacking past a machine's Security and Privacy safeguards.

While such requests are often legitimate, and come from users who experience exactly the kind of problem that you post, we have no way of determining legitimate vs. not legitimate, therefore we do not respond to such requests.

While we will not help you with getting around passwords we can advise you as to how you can have this resolved using legitimate means, take the computer to a reputable tech local to you or have them come to you, you will need proof of ownership such as the sales invoice, picture ID such as a driving licence/passport and proof of your address such as a recent utility bill.

Can you think of some reason why a password would suddenly be required when there never was one before???  We have turned this computer off and on multiple times and only ever had to press the enter button when it asked for a password and it opened right up.

This computer is at least 10 years old and no one has a receipt for it or any other way to prove it belongs to my father and my late step-mother, as he never used it.....

Thanks

No as you cannot enter a password that never existed, as you are aware already the password field is normally left blank when no password protection has been set up.

As said in my reply #2 it may be possible to access the pictures and files without booting into Windows, email contacts no but you should not need help with this if you have legitimate access to the email account concerned, you just log into the email account on another computer.

Please start a new thread if you would like help with trying to recover the data from the HDD as continuing here would be off topic and may give the impression that you are being offered a password work around.
