OK I ran it again to get a fresh report and it went further this time and said the problem is solved.

Explorer search is behaving differently now it is asking if I want to add to the index.

Outlook now says that 8900 items need to be indexed before it said something like 700.

If I go to Control panel > Indexing Options

I now have the list populated. the modify and Pause buttons are now functional, only advanced was before.

I can see the items indexed count increasing. i think it may have worked.

I won't reboot until indexing is finish.

I'll let you know.

The search and indexing are definitely working now. Thanks. What might have caused this to happen? Perhaps installing something that messed up my permissions? i thought there might have been a Fixit tool to do this but my searches returned nothing. Thanks again.
