I eventually got round to getting all my data back onto my PC. All looks good.

 

I downloaded the Kingston Toolbox. I've tried to run a diagnostic test four times over the last 3 weeks but every time I try it, it runs for roughly 30 secs then tells me that the self-test was interrupted by the host! Any idea what might be causing this?

 

When I try to run the Firmware update it tells me that no discs can be selected for this operation and that the SSD disc is in IDE mode.

I think we determined that ACHI is not supported in your BIOS so is set to Native Mode,  user manual  > https://www.manualsl...page=108#manual

If you are now getting better performance using the SSD, and as AHCI is not supported, may be the reason for the Kingston software to fail.   You will need to inquire from the Kingston Web site for further help on that.

No problem, PC is running much better now anyway, like night and day compared to what it was.

For safety and simplicity if the OS goes kaput, I would use Macrium  Reflect to take a drive image and save to your external drive.

You should than set up a backup strategy.

If the XP machine does not get heavy use, i.e. lots of image saving/alteration, the simplest method,    Once you have the drive image, use the XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard .

 

Run once a week or month, taking care that you always have the previous backup available/saved and the current one.

a good backup strategy is 3-2-1 method. and the one i'd recommend everyone use especially if they have data they really would hate to lose.

personally i hate the cloud and never store any of my data there, so my 3rd off site backup is round my daughters home.

Hi Guys,

 

I've been using the PC for a while now and all seems to be running OK.

 

I can't thank you guys enough for all the help you've given me, especially iammykyl for the help and patience you have had with me.

 

It's really reassuring for someone like me to know that there are guys like yourself willing to give up your time for novices like myself, not to mention the money saved as I'm sure my problem would have cost a pretty penny to sort had I taken it to a PC World or the likes.

 

I also feel that I have learnt a little bit along the way. An added bonus for us all!!
