Since upgrading to Windows 10 my sound card or any sound card would not work.  Not a big problem, I get sound out of one of my monitors but there are times I would like more sound.  Nothing changed for about 6 months.

No though, the computer crashes with the BSOD and at first it was the "faulty-hardware-corrupted-page" , now it's a new message but sounds serious.  The crashes come sooner and sooner.

I tried CC Cleaner and of course it found issues but they want $40+ to clean it.   So, didn't do that.

Is there a truly less expensive option?  Maybe something that came with windows 10?

Writing this at work so responses and actions for fixing it will be slow.

Thanks for your help.

Gday Jdpowell.

Please supply us with the following details.

Was the upgrade to W10 though the Microsoft Invitation , what did you upgrade from?

or from a disk you purchased?

Is the OS 32bit or 64bit?

If the computer is a brand named, like Dell/HP, give the brand/model number.   If a custom build, please give the full specs, including the brand/model of the PSU.

Have you backed up your Data?

If needed, would you be OK with working inside the computer?

Yes, I upgraded from Window 8 to 10 through their invitation.

64 bit

HP Pavillion KT829AV-ABA d4999t-2.      But I have also added a few things.  Like extra RAM, video card, USB card and the sound card.  So, just a few.

Tried to backup yesterday 5/17 but it won't do it.

Yes, I have access to the innards.

Got another BSOD code yesterday too.  Bugcode_USB_Driver.   I was thinking it was due to plugging in the backup drive for the backup that didn't work.

Thanks,

Thanks for the update.

Please do the following.

Disconnect all exterior devices, except, Monitor, keyboard/mouse,

Switch off the PSU, but leave connected.   Switch off the monitor.

Touch a bare metal part of the computer case or a PSU mounting screw, earthing yourself, this to discharge any static stored in your body.

Remove the sound and USB card, remove any other cards, except the GPU.

Switch on the PSU and monitor, start the computer.

If OK.

Plug in your recovery drive to an original case USB port and attempt a backup.

Working on it.  Still having issues with the backup though.  Will post again when it's done.

Thanks

OK.

Is the computer running without crashing now? or problems are just with performing the backup?

Couple of question when you have finished.

Did you download the W10 ISO file?

Did you create a recovery disk after upgrading to W10?

Have you got a USB stick? 2GB would do, just in case your backup fails, we can create a Linux Live USB.

It has not crashed since Wednesday morning.  Don't know why not.  I pulled all the stuff out yesterday (Thursday).

Can't do a backup to my external hard drive.  It will have to be replaced.  The replacement will be here 5/23.

I'm gonna say no to the W10 ISO file and if I made a recovery disk when I upgraded it's long gone now.

I do have a couple of USB sticks.

Strange it not crashing, perhaps a  microsoft update fixed it. who cna tell.

Should you still have issues with the new backu drive, we have an alternative, using a Live Linux cd, which runs completely in the RAM, so you can mount the Windows Boot drive and copy Data to a USB stick.

In the meantime we can look at the File system.  I won't rewrite instructions as this one is very good,   Tip, Copy an paste commends, that way they are correct.

Run sfc /scannow once from Windows, if errors are found, run twice from Safe Mode.

Let us know the results, Please do not run DISM yet.

Now my winge.

I strongly recommend uninstalling CCleaner and any other such tweaking programs.  They are a con and often do more damage than good.   Windows can mange the Registry without outside help, there can be hundreds of obsolete entries that just sit there doing no harm, removing them will not make the system perform better.   Deleting a current key or changing it's value causes no end of problems.

Using the in built cleaning tools and defrag of a non SSD drives is all you need.

Okay, will do the stuff in the last post.  Got the new 2tb drive and as far as I can tell, the backup is fine.

Would you zip up the last few .dmp files in C:\Windows\minidump then upload and attach the zip file in a post here please.

See Add an image to your post

It's written for images but it's the same for a zip file.

Copy the .dmp files to your desktop then try running Winzip there.

Delete them when done.
