I have an old laptop (HP Compaq nx7400) that's running Windows XP.  I know it's pretty worthless.  Any advice on what to do with it?  I've read some ideas online like installing Linux OS or something but I'm not bright enough to do that.

Hello notrealbright... and :welcome:

What do you intend to do with this laptop?  What type of use?

Thanks for responding!  It's not my main computer so maybe just surfing the net from the couch or simple word processing on some work documents.  Only if it's economically feasible.  Otherwise what options exist for getting rid of it?

Windows XP is fine to use for word processing, but you absolutely don't want it connected to the web or your home network with other PCs using an internet connection... it just has too many vulnerabilities.

If you plan on surfing the internet at all, I would advise setting up a dual-boot scenario with Lubuntu.  It's a "Lightweight" version of Ubuntu, with a similar graphical user interface to Windows XP.  It's not hard to use and much safer to browse the web with.  The link I've provided offers step by step instructions on setting up dual-boot.  There are plenty of other pages on the web to explain how to use Lubuntu, if you have any questions about that.

Good luck, and keep us updated!

Thanks a lot!  I'll look into that.
