Helping my aunt reclaim her relatively new Sony Vaio Pentium 4 PC. Her Hijack This! log is below. Someone else tried before she called me, and I think they may have done more harm than good. I see a few suspect BHOs and Wild Tangent, but would like a more qualified eval. She has Norton System Works and I added AdAware SE for her. She's already able to use her machine again (someone had installed Ghost Surf, which completely blocked her ability to access the Net with IE, etc.).

Hi espokane,

You Aunt's PC is relatively clean. I need to do a little research on Ghost Surf. So I am not fixing it as of now. There are a few small items which need to be fixed-

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entires, delete some files or uninstall sosme programs. If in case, you do not see those entires / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download LSPFix from here.

2. Fix LSP

You have a bad anti-Spyware program on your PC - BulletProof. Please read more about such rogue programs here. This program is best uninstalled.
  • Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
  • Check the I know what I'm doing box.
  • In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of apptoport.dll.
  • Select every instance of apptoport.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
  • When you are done click Finish>>.
3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on Scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Close all Windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix Checked.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

4. Uninstall Rogue Programs

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following programs -

Bullet Proof
Viewpoint Manager
Wild Tangent

5. Delete Rogue Files

Open Windows exploirer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following files and folders -

c:\program files\bulletproofsoft.com
C:\Program Files\ShopperReports
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\WildTangent

Reboot the PC and post a fresh Hijack This log here.
