Just wanted to touch base. Haven't forgotten what you did for me and all the help you gave me. Memory upgrade is still on my long list of things to do.

 

I currently have a broadband issue, which I am trying to resolve with my ISP.

 

Is a down SNR that drops at times each day below 6 acceptable with DLM, or “Dynamic Line Management” (I don't have fibre)?

Yes, that was an unexpected result.....now you face an uncertain time ahead.

 

Ok, will do. I was recently offered a new package with benefits, which I accepted, but I didn't know that my line would be moved to DLM, which cannot be manually adjusted.

 

I had an up / down SNR of around 12 before, it is now set at 6, which it mostly stays at, but briefly drops below each day.

 

I asked for my profile to be put back to what it was. >>>

 

"I'm sorry we can't manually override DLM, the profile is set by an automated process, DLM monitors connection stability and errors and sets a line profile to give a fast speed with stable connection and low error count."

 

I had an intermittent loss of broadband connection problem for a long time in the past, this was finally rectified when the cable to the exchange was changed from aluminium to copper.

 

I don't want an unstable connection again. Don't think connection is dropping, but difficult to know as profile can be automatically altered at any time.

Yep now we know exactly how the Germans felt when Hitler came to power.

 

Open a command prompt and type:

 

ping -t 8.8.8.8

Hit Enter.

This starts a never ending ping to Google's DNS.  As long as you leave it up it will keep pinging.  If you leave it running for an hour or a day then hit Ctrl c it will stop and tell you how many pings were Lost during the interval.

Just pinged -t 8.8.8.8 for 2 hours - no packets were lost - please see attachments, one of which is my ADSL (Sync) Summary today. Haven't seen any red loss of internet connection, just brief drops in down SN margin, to 2.6 / 3.9.... perhaps a better profile has now been set and I should just monitor it?

 

DLM was recently reset by my ISP. Do you have DLM in the USA?

 

A few pages haven't loaded properly recently, have had an abnormal layout (had to reload), not sure what caused that.

I carried out an essential XP SP3 repair installation last year.......you helped me in a big way with this.......so wanted to let you know....

 

I had no Windows updates at all. I turned on Windows Automatic Updates after the WannaCry Ransomeware scare just in case......I received 146 XP SP3 + Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile updates on 14th May 2017! Microsoft didn't state that they would be allowing this? They only stated that they had released a custom patch for XP, which I installed separately - KB4012598.

Interesting.  Guess they just turned their update servers back on for the patch and they still had all of the updates on them so you lucked out.

I was lucky! The patch for XP SP3 - KB4012598 - didn't actually come through Windows Automatic Updates, I had to search for it afterwards and manually install it?

I did search for XP SP3 updates some time ago but I found it too difficult and time consuming.
