Normally when the fixlist runs it gets removed.  However, since you are copying it to a different folder you may have left the last fixlist.txt in the download folder.  Then when you downloaded the new fixlist it couldn't save as fixlist.txt because the old one was there so it probably saved it as fixlist(1).txt.  You then copied the old fixlist.txt to the FRST folder so you got the same as before.  Try deleting the fixlist.txt from your downloads then download it again.

I've deleted all the previous fixlist.txt and downloaded the latest again.

Same as the first time I'm afraid: "No fixlist.txt found"

I am looking in my documents and can see FRST.exe and the latest fixlist.txt there side by side though?

This is why I copied the original 4 file fixlist.txt into the FRST folder because it wouldn't work, it did when I did that, but that's not the right thing to do.

?

What is this FRST folder you talk about?  When you ran FRST the first time it said it was in:

C:\Documents and Settings\dell owner\My Documents\Downloads\

That should be the same place that fixlist.txt should wind up in.

Yes it was downloaded to C:\Documents and Settings\dell owner\My Documents\Downloads\ and so was the fixlist.txt.

My Computer > My Documents  > Downloads > Folders > Left hand side list of folders appear, click on FRST....I copied it there.

I have limited knowledge of computers.....

"No fixlist.txt found. The fixlist.txt should be in the same folder / directory the tool is located."

?

Maybe I should remove FRST, download again and try?

Successful!

Unfortunately though for some reason those 2 helper DLL files still cannot be loaded (see end of this).

A DLL error occurred with MiniToolBox at start of IP Configuration (took a screenshot but still can't upload files here).

I removed MiniToolBox and downloaded it again (as suggested) - but same error occurred.

Seen a couple of these in Event Viewer:

Source: Winlogon

The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Problem: : This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. (Code12)
Resolution: Two devices have been assigned the same input/output (I/O) ports, the same interrupt, or the same Direct Memory Access channel (either by the BIOS, the operating system, or a combination of the two). This error message can also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device (for example, if a universal serial bus (USB) controller does not get an interrupt from the BIOS because of a corrupt Multiprocessor System (MPS) table).
You can use Device Manager to determine where the conflict is and disable the conflicting device.
On the "General Properties" tab of the device, click "Troubleshoot" to start the troubleshooting wizard.

I wonder if it would help to register the dlls.

Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt then type (with an Enter after each line:

cd \windows\system32
regsvr32 NAPMONTR.DLL
regsvr32 DOT3CFG.DLL

You will probably get an error llike this for each of the last two but maybe not.

This is from my Win 7.  Don't have the XP here to try it.

Thank you for your continuing help.

Unfortunately....

"LoadLibrary("NAPMONTR.DLL") failed - The specified module could not be found."

Same with the other one.

?

Regarding the error message I receive with Google Chrome browser (and similar with Safari) when I try to access secure sites (for example my bank / Yahoo Mail):

"Your Connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from www.google.com (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"

Google Chrome browser 49.0.2623.112

Can you see any reason for this in the scans?

Avast network scan doesn't find any problem.

Re: Your post number 31......would you kindly check the BIOS for me in case I do decide to update the BIOS.

Might want to wait until we check to see what BIOS you do have.  I think Speccy will tell us:"

BIOS
            Brand    Dell Computer Corporation
            Version    A06
            Date    20/04/2001

Your BIOS is 3 versions behind the one on the DELL site so it wouldn't hurt to update it if you can find a floppy.

Can you run the  FRST File search for:

dot3svc.*;kmsvc.*;qagentrt.*;napmontr

?

Let's see if they are still where we put them.

"Your Connection is not private

NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"

We probably need to update your certificates.  First verify that you have Automatic Update Root Certificates:

Then see if you have KB2718704

FRST File search attached - it found them.

Is there anyway to remove those additional 3 that were duplicated in error? But I guess they would all be removed being the same name?

Thank you for looking into the BIOS. I've never bought a floppy, but will do so at some point.

Interesting.....

Yes, I do have the system component, Update Root Certificates (screenshot attached).

No, I cannot see KB2718704 Windows Update in Add / Remove Programs under Updates.

I have few Windows Updates despite regularly carrying out Microsoft Windows Update custom scans and installing ALL priority updates.

This was discovered when I came here. I downloaded Microsoft Fix It - it found and successfully repaired corrupt files......but this occurred too late (post April 8th 2014 - end of XP updates).

UPDATE - From Avast regarding the uninstalling / updating problem:

"The procedure entry point Get Logical Processor Information could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll." (error I received)

"This looks like broken installation of SP3 because this entry point was added to Windows XP in SP3. I would suggest to reinstall SP3 if it's possible."

!!

They weren't in error.  XP keeps dll files in C:\windows\system32 & in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\

I wonder if it's a permission error that keeps them from loading.

Please download GrantPerms.zip http://download.blee.../GrantPerms.zipand save it to your desktop.
Unzip the file and run GrantPerms.exe
Copy and paste the following in the edit box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dot3svc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kmsvc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qagentrt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\dot3svc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\kmsvc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\qagentrt.dll

Click Unlock. When it is done click "OK".
Click List Permissions and post the result (Perms.txt) that pops up. A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Just to clarify, I was referring to when the same fix ran twice because the fixllist hadn't been deleted. So there are two of each now.

Thank you for the further instructions, which I will deal with later.

Very glad you're around with all these issues occurring.

The second running of the fixit didn't really do anything as the first time it ran it moved the files from the MIA folder so there was nothing for it to do.

I will be driving back to Colorado from Florida over the next 4 days so expect delays.  On the last trip I was too tired when I got to the motel to do anything.

I think what is happening is SFC is replacing perfectly good files with older versions that it found on the XP install disk.  I wonder if it's possible to reinstall SP3?

You can download SP3 from the Windows Catalog (have to use IE and go to https://catalog.upda.../site/Home.aspx) then search for

XP AND Sp3

When I do it the top result is:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)

Try downloading it and then try to install it.  If it won't install because you already have it then uninstall SP3 reboot and then try it.

Please see Perms.txt and MiniToolBox.txt attached.

Same I'm afraid......very strange.

I wonder if SFC could activate them?

Re: "The second running of the fixit didn't really do anything as the first time it ran it moved the files from the MIA folder so there was nothing for it to do."

Oh I see, pleased to hear that.

I feel the whole operating system is broken.

That an XP SP3 repair installation is needed. I haven't got many updates so won't be losing much there.

VERY scared to do it though, feel out of my depth......what if something goes wrong....

My computer may be old, but it's my most treasured possession! Can't be without it.

My computer developed lots of problems after I installed SP3 in the past and when I tried I couldn't uninstall it. I know it's supposed to be essential, but in my experience it messed up the operating system.

The whole operating system I have now was cleanly installed by a PC World technician using his XP SP3 CD.

I subsequently bought a brand new XP SP3 CD, so it is a different key, hope that won't be a problem?

I was previously advised against another clean installation.

Wish you a safe journey. :)

You can try sfc /scannow and see if it makes a difference.

Before you run it, clear the event logs:

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK to bring up the Event Viewer.  Right click on System and Clear All Events, No (we don't want to save the old log), OK. Repeat for Application.

Also check out

In particular the copying of i386 from your XP SP3 disk and the change to the path in the registry.

Also see if you have a cbs.log at all.  It should be in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log  .'If you do rename it to cbs.log.old or just delete it.  This is a hidden system file area so if you haven't already tell windows to let you see them:

Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button

Now run sfc /scannow

when it finishes see if the cbs.log has any lines with  [SR]

If it won't let you open it copy the file and paste the file on your desktop.then open the one on your desktop.  Do that anyway so you won't lose the log.  How big is it?

It's also possible to go into the Event Viewer, Windows Logs, and right click on system and Save All Events As....  If you do that right after SFC finishes the log might not be too big to attach.  How big is it?

You can go to the Windows Catalog and search for KB2718704.  See if you can install it and if that helps with the errors your browsers reported
