It's a new Asus SATA internal dvd drive set up as an external one but even an old Samsung IDE (specifically for XP) won't work.

Desktop or laptop?  I assume your DVD is on a USB to SATA adapter.  What is the make and model number of the adapter and the DVD drive?  Is there a separate power connection?

With the new drive connected:  Right click on My Computer and select Manage and then Device Manager then View, Show Hidden Drivers.  Now look in the right pane for yellow flagged devices.  Right click on one and select properties then click on the Details tab.  Change Property to Hardware IDs.  Click on the top one then right click and copy.  Paste that into a reply.  Repeat for all yellow flagged devices.

Hi, sorry about the late reply.

The two computers they don't work on are old; Compaq, (running XP), and Dell, (running w10), and they are desktops.

The adapter are for hooking up hdd or anything that you want to use externally, and they worked before with other drives.

The adapter came with it's own plug/power supply and it has IDE and SATA connections.

There's three other internal DVD drives that are not recognised either, two SATA and one IDE.

I did as you suggest, but although new devices are showing, some of which are not connected,  there's nothing in W10 right pane with yellow marks.

The only yellow mark in XP is for a Network Controller.

I sent back the two new Asus drives, (perhaps I shouldn't had), because they were part of a long line of defective goods I received and I got fed up. Perhaps you can help with these three dvd drives? The models are: Samsung SH-224, Samsung SM-308 and Sony AD-5260S.

2 Sata & 1 IDE.  Does your adapater still work with the things it did before?  Sounds like it might have failed.

Hi. Yes it did. I think I just discovered what the problem is, faulty USB hub!  I unhooked the hub from the computer and connected yet another DVD drive in the USB port on the computer itself and it worked! Got to try it with a new hub soon and if it doesn't work I'll come back. Thanks for trying to help
