Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic

You don't seem to have any antivirus software installed. We recommend the free version of AVG. Please download, install, and run a full system scan.

Download here: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

I have downloaded the software but it won't run. It looks like the file is unzipping but then nothing happens. I have looked for help on the website but they don't offer support for the freeware. Their FAQ's didn't have any answers either.

Any ideas?

I am also working on getting anti-virus software installed that my company gives to employees for their home computers. (Symantec/Norton Anti-Virus 8.1)

There's probably an active virus that is preventing it from running.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

I am running Housecall and have hundreds of viruses that are "Not cleanable" and "Can not access". Most of them are variations of Worm Bagle. Some are trojans.

I ran the program with Autoclean. I am getting ready to run moosoft now. Is there a way to get rid of the "not cleanable" viruses?

Now that Housecall has finished running, it is asking me if I want to delete the files. Is that what I want to do?

Thanks

Yes, if they're identified by Housecall delete them. Then restart your computer, and try installing AVG again.

Is there a way to get rid of the "not cleanable" viruses?

Delete them. <_<

OK, here is where I am so far.

I have run Adware, AVG, Housecall and Moosoft. Things are a lot better than when I first asked for help. Thanks for everything. I am still getting a few pop-ups. Nothing serious, just annoying. Anything we can do about that?

My HJT log is below.

Here is the log. There were a few things I couldn't find, but I got most. The first one - WinTools - would not allow me to delete the temp file. I deleted everything else from WinTools.

The system is running much better. Still getting a few pop-ups but nothing like before.
