PLEASE REPOST FOR ME IN THE APPROPRIATE FORUM ON GtG.

I developed a problem last night with my Dell desktop with W10 -- when using Chrome most of my web sites ( like NYTimes and Politico would display the first page and then stall, displaying error messages like "these pages have become inoperable: Wait or Kill.") I found similar behavior using IE.

Without turning the PC off, I put the problem aside overnight to be investigated further. This morning I found this error message:

----
Dear customer: A serious malfunction has been detected with Windows 10  and your Chrome52.0.2743.116. Call a Microsoft-certified technician to help you resolve the issues. 888-518-1112.

DO NOT SHUT DOWN OR RESTART THE COMPUTER. call 1-888-518-1112.

For your safety, closing the Chrome browser has been disabled without support of the Microsoft-Certified technician to avoid corruption to the registry of your OS.
------

Can someone please tell me whether this is a legitimate message or just an unscrupulous attempt to scare and sell me services?
1. Can I/should I really not turn off the PC? Can MS really " disable my closing Chrome?"
2. Right now my PC shows a blue screen full of symbols and a message "BSOD DRIVER PROBLEM. Call PC Support Technician."

I would be grateful for advice on how to proceed. ........  Batpark

Hello,

If you are seeing random a “Windows Warning Error” pop-up and asking you to call a phone number to fix your PC, then your computer is infected with an adware or a potentially unwanted program.

Restart the computer, I'll have the topic moved to Malware and we will run scans there.

zep516: Many thanks for fielding my help request. To be sure I do not screw anything up (needlesss to say, I am a novice) ......when you say "Restart the computer." do you mean shut it down and boot up from scratch (thus violating thosee instructions in the error message not to shut down before calling that suspect 1-800-number)? ...batpark

FWIW: I am posting this reply now on the infected PC, using my Firefox browser.

I thought it was stuck at the blue screen, if you're able to use the computer with Firefox then no reason to shut it down. Never call one of those phone numbers for additional information or instruction.

As soon as we get moved to Malware we will have a closer look at things.

Thanks
Joe :)

Hi! My name is zep516 and Welcome to Geekstogo!
I'll do the best I can to resolve your computer issue
Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, don't continue Stop and ask! Never be afraid to ask questions! :)

Everything gets download to the desktop and tools are "Run as administrator."

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Joe: It did seem tobe stuck on blue screen but I tried Allapps\firefox and I was able to connect with GeekstoGo via Firefox. ???

Will I be hearing from GtG after you get my Help request moved over, or should I initiate further help requests on my own? ... Batpark

zep516: Before I embark on the path you describe let me add a bit of new info.

Working now with IE on the W10 desktop, I find I can get to my target URLs ok but that most of them (like nytimes.com) stall after displaying the first page and do not let me scroll. When that happens IE displays this message: "Nytimes.com is not responding due to a long-running script."

Should I be working to resolve that issue first before I undertake the Farbar etc, fixes?

HOW does one fix "long-running scripts?" .... batpark

zep516: I am about to try again to download FRST.

But I am not sure i understand your instructions re:

a. "Right click to run as administrator". --- Please clarify. What is it that I right click?

b. Say "YES to disclaimer". -- I assume you are telling me to say Yes to the note that pops up on how this d/l is rarely used and could harm the computer, right?

c. The two logs that are generated: I am to send them back to you by posting them right here, correct?

Thanks. ... batpark

Right click on the FRST Icon on you desktop as seen below
index_zpsae74eeb3.png

When FRST opens click scan
frst.JPG

And yes the 2 logs that are generated, copy and paste them into your next reply. Might take 2 replies to paste each log
