Hello my asus 1025c netbook has started making a lot of noise when the fan is running and I'm curious as to if replacing the fan will stop this. How or what to investigate as another cause. Is my pc overheating for some reason(thermal gel)?

After 5-10mins of running the fan makes a loud noise and gets to become really loud. Its like the fan has gone into high speed overdrive or has stuck while still going(not much airflow). The noise will stop and the fans runs normally, but more often its making a noise.

Ive ran speedfan and the hard disk temp is good, but the others are all running around 60-70 Degrees. PC speed only gets affected briefly if the noise if very loud.

I've opened the case(didn't remove bottom casing/Mobo) and nothing looks wrong(Dust level fine),

What can I investigate or should I just replace the fan.

Major cause of overheating in laptops is dust build up between the fan and the heatsink.  You won't see it unless you take the fan out.  Due to the amount of work required to get to the fan on most laptops (Dells are the exception), whenever I do clean out the heatsink I also replace the thermal pads with Arctic Silver 5.  (Amazon has a kit with cleaners for about $12)

The loud fan noise may just be it trying to cool the PC when the heatsink is clogged with dust.

There is a small possibility that the CPU is being overworked by a bad program or malware.  We can check that with Process Explorer:

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

You have both Avast & Comodo anti-viruses. Two anti-viruses wil; fight each other and slow down your PC.   I would uninstall Comodo.

VLC is taking up 1/4 of your CPU.  Are you watching a video or something.  Can you turn it off?

Then with just one anti-virus and no VLC and Firefox closed, make a new Process Explorer log and post it..

Yes I put on a video as well...I'm normally watching a video. Comodo is my firewall, Avast is my anti-virus.

Comodo is not just your firewall.  It is also providing an anti-virus.  While you can get it to be just a firewall you have to be very carefule when you install it.  A good firewall that doesn't install other stuff is tiny firewall:

OK.  Doesn't look too bad now.  Can you hover over the dllhost.exe and see what dll it is running?  Or maybe right click on it and select Properties?

Replacement Fan with Heat sink on order plus thermal pads and gel. Can the CPU itself be becoming less effective resulting in additional heat?

It is possible to overheat them and break them but usually it doesn't cause them to be less inefficient.  I have heard of one guy who had to underclock his CPU to get it to work but he forgot to put the thermal paste in and it got super hot.

I suspect a new fan and heatsink will do the job.  Hopefully you get the right heatsink.  Last time I ordered one I got a different one from what I needed.  The heatsink usually comes with thermal pads also on it but make sure you clean off the remnants of the old pads off the CPU and video chip with alcohol.

When you take the laptop apart pay close attention to which screw went where.  Take digital pictures of the disassembly process so you will be sure to replace all cables and screws correctly.  Sometimes they use slightly longer screws in some some places so keep track of the screws.  I have a friend that uses a piece of masking tape face up on the table.  He sticks each screw to the tape and make a note of where it came from on the tape.  If you have carpet put an old sheet under you work area in case you drop a screw.  You can usually find a video on how to disassemble the laptop if you search on the model number.  Dells are usually pretty simple.  HPs are nightmares.
