Hi JereMichelle, and welcome to our forums.
Sorry to hear about the problem with your Dell Laptop computer.
This will be a valuable lesson for your son, as it will reinforce the importance of passwords and getting them input correctly. If he was wise he will have created a password reset disc at the time he set the password... if he didn't make one for any reason then he will have learned another valuable lesson.
Passwords are generally "case sensitive" so a password like for example (%Gcd£,*!8?Fb will just not work if it is incorrectly typed as (%Gcd£,*!8?FB so one of the first things he could do is to check his typing!
We do not assist folks here on the forum with breaking or circumventing passwords as this is against our Terms of Use and we have no way of knowing if someone has legitimate access to the computer concerned or not.
Two extra points for you, a password reset disc needs to be made before trouble strikes and the same goes for BIOS passwords, creating a BIOS password only offers its protection after the BIOS password has been set.
Your son could of course reinstall the operating system using a disc image created before he set the password, or alternatively perform a fresh install of the operating system, but please remember this latter step will usually clear all data files, (docs, music, photos, etc.) from the computer, so hopefully his back ups are all up to date comprehensive, and with at least one extra copy kept safe offsite on remove media.
Sorry we can't help further, other than to suggest your son tries what he thinks the password is, and types it correctly
Regards
