Good day alistair and welcome to Geeks to Go,

From your question it is very hard to devise a suitable response as there is alot more entailed in order to understand exactly what it is you would like to do.

1. First off, are you looking to build an entire lab inventory management system or just part of it?
2. Is there a specific reason why you would like to build a custom from the ground up system? Instead of using an off the shelf software package that might already have everything you need?

In terms of the tools you will need, will depend entirely on your requirements and what you are trying to achieve (Eg. web based, distributed, performance, etc...). The same goes for the actual "implementation"; which is dependent on your development process.

Without being too unhelpful, I think you should start with Google and research the different products that are already out there and see the features each of them have. See where each product can fulfill your needs and where they fall short, look into products that may fulfill 80% of your requirements and might have the ability to write add-ons to; definitely recommend looking at some open source solutions (If there are any). Unfortunately it wouldn't make sense for me to do the searches for you as I don't know what your requirements are.

I hope at least some of my advice is useful.

Peace Out
