I have had a Linksys BEFW11S4 for well over one year. Last week it just stopped working. I have a white Westell modem from BellSouth which works perfectly fine.
The problem is that when I connect my router I can not access the internet. I have been on the phone with Linksys for two days. Initially they told me that the router was defective. I went and purchased a new one and keep getting the same results. I have tried to connect it using the cd and through the Linksys website remote setup. Either way the same result...the pc does not recogize the router for some reason. I have changed cables, reset modem and router, gone through power cycles, restarted the computer, and anything else Linksys or myself have thought of. Still....no recognition of the router by the pc.
The only thing I can think of now, is that maybe there is some kind of virus or other invasive thing going on.
Please help!!! I have two other computers that are connected through this router and really need to get them all up and running.
Again, when I connect directly through the modem, bypassing the router, everything works just fine.

If you cannot connect to the internet when the router is connected, I'm thinking that maybe your router does not forward DHCP requests for an IP address. Do you have a static IP or DHCP? Your LAN properties may have been reconfigured when you ran the installation for the router. You may have to go into the properties and change them to Automatically assign an IP, or maybe the otherway around, you might have to go and assign a static address. You most likely use DHCP, and the router is not configured for it or doesn't support it. Was your old router the same type? Check with your ISP to see if they use a DHCP server.

I just remembered you might need to give your NIC the address to the router as the Default Gateway in order to travel outside the router. Type ipconfig /all at a command prompt and post what it says here.

Friend fixed this by changing setting on modem from ppp0e to bridged ethernet.
