Hello. I am having trouble launching Windows Movie Maker. I have asked this question to Microsoft Answers, but haven't received a solution or much help in general there. I have found Geeks To Go to be way more helpful so I thought I'd try my question here.

 

Movie Maker fails to launch with the error "The program can't start because UXCore.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I have uninstalled Windows Essentials 2012 and reinstalled several times (using both online and offline installers). I have rebooted. I have deleted Windows Live directories from Programs Files (x86) and Common Files directories. I have delete UXCore.dll from system32 directory. I have followed all suggestions in this post and this post all without success. I have tried a repair install. I ran sfc /scannow as an admin which did not find any integrity violations. I have analyzed/defraged my hdd. Nothing has fixed the problem. UXCore.dll exists in my system32 directory and Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Shared directories. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. Photo Gallery (which is installed with Movie Maker as part of the Windows Essentials package) launches and functions without issue. Thanks!

Check your path.  See if C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Shared directories is in the path.

 

(Open an elevated command prmopt and type:  set path

then hit Enter or open Control panel, System, Advanced System Settings, Environmental Variables, Under System Variables, scroll down and select Path then Edit.  - Bit hard to see you have to scroll left.  Easier method is to click on the text in the edit box and hit Ctrl +a then Ctrl + c then open a notepad and Ctrl + v.

If not in the path then add it.  Alternatively you can try copying the UXCore.dll to the same folder where the movie maker exe lives.

 

There may be a permission problem so right click on UXCore.dll and select Properties then Security.  Add Everyone to the list with Full Control.  (Edit then Add type in Everyone then click on Check Names then OK.  It should back up to the previous screen with Everyone selected.  Click on the Full Control box under Allow. OK)

 

 

 

There is a program called Process Monitor which may show you what is happening.

 

Download Process Monitor http://live.sysinter...com/Procmon.exe

 

Save it to your desktop and right click on it and Run As Admin.

 

As soon as the program starts, try to start movie maker then as soon as it fails, 

 

File, then uncheck Capture Events.  Once PM stops capturing you can have it search for  UXCore.dll  that should show you where it expects to find it.

Thanks RKinner! The Process Monitor tool helped a lot! It revealed that Movie Maker was looking in the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\" for some reason. I had to copy ucxore.dll, wldcore.dll, wlidcli.dll, uxctl.dll, uxcontacts.dll, and uxcalendar.dll to the Photo Gallery directory. Most of the missing files were located up one directory in Shared. The program now launches and appears to be functions.

Hi! I've been experiencing the same problem. Although I've followed all the given instructions and fixed the missing uxcore.dll, but every time I open Movie Maker, "The directory name is invalid" still shows up.

This problem with Wldcore.dll may occur due to improper loading of windows or updating drivers, I recommend updating the Visual C ++ database, as described briefly here - https://wikidll.com/...oft/wldcore-dll
