Hello,

I had multiple issues with my old HP xw6200 WorkStation desktop, one of which was it not booting.  I've messed around with this PC for weeks (even posting another thread here) but I'm at the point that I'm ready to cut my losses.  So I'm going to image a Lenovo Thinkcentre m93p tower desktop that I had sitting around and get it going as my new desktop PC. I figured it's a newer PC and it wasn't pieced together like the old HP workstation. So I took my SSD and 2nd drive (500GB WD Black spinner) into work to get some screen shots of the files, etc on each drive to use as a reference when reinstalling programs.

Yesterday I was able to copy what I needed from the SSD, but the 2nd drive gives me the "Volume does not contain a recognized file system, format the drive" error. It's showing the drive as "RAW" instead of NTFS.  From what I've googled, something must have happened to the secondary drive when I disconnected it from my external cables at work.

I ran a Test Disk http://www.cgsecurit...stDisk_Download scan on the drive and it seemed to find files, but I wasn't able to transfer them anywhere successfully. Tried another program and the "trial" would only let me view the files it found. So I moved on to "ReclaiMe" http://www.reclaime....filesystem.aspx, which again the free version wanted me to purchase to be able to do more than view the files it found.

Is there a simpler way to go about this than buying a program??  Thanks in advance.

Gday dar124.

It's very important not to alter the damaged drive.   Use a live Puppy Linus USB stick to see if you can see and copy the files you want.

if this no good, use Macrium Reflect to clone the drive, > http://www.macrium.c...eflectfree.aspx

Download and try the free Recuva, working only on the cloned drive, > https://www.piriform.com/recuva

So I tried the Linux USB and it couldn't find the drive.  I found another program online (forget which one) and again it found the files, but would only let me transfer 4 folders at a time with the "free" version.  That would have literally taken me weeks to get all the folders transferred over.  Scan the disk for 2-3 hours, transfer 4 folders, scan the disk for 2-3 hours, transfer 4 folders ...

The data wasn't really that important, but just a hassle to come across / download again, etc.  Recuva couldn't see the drive either.  I ended up formatting the drive and then used Recuva to scan it.  It found 15,000 +/- files!!!  So I sorted thru those and copied a bunch.  Some were duplicates and some were files that were previously deleted, but I was able to get a decent amount of the data back.

Glad that messing around is done!!!  Thanks for your assistance iammykyl.  The new system is being imaged as I type!!!

Gday.

Thanks for updating you Topic.

Pleased to hear you eventually got it sorted.   No matter which software you use, it's always a lot of work, and messy.

If you made a copy of the damaged drive,  you could try Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free, > http://www.easeus.co...ry-software.htm

If we can help you further, just post.

You are very welcome

Good luck.
