I have an HP dv6 for myself for work (for 3 years and I love it). My son is getting in to computers and coding, so for his birthday I found him a used HP dv6-1230us that appeared to be in perfect working ordder (just had some minor plastic cosmetic pieces chipped off).

The real issue started when I found out it wasn't properly wiped and there were personal.... ummm.... let's just say honeymoon videos and photos.  Plus it came with Vista.  I found a computer tech who completely wiped it and installed a legal Win 7 copy.  To top it off, he wouldn't accept any money (I am a disabled Marine and he tried joining the Corps but washed out).  So I would feel like I was taking advantage asking him for more help.

On to current issues: When I first got this in May this year it had an aftermarket batter and charger, and both worked GREAT.  My dv6 gets maybe 1.5hrs on a charge.  His got 3+.  And of course it connected to our wifi no problem.  BUT it only had 4GB RAM (not enough for Minecraft apparently), so he preferred mine with 8GB of self-upgraded RAM. I began working on his and it now has two major issues:

1. The batter will not hold a charge more than 2%.  Even plugged in overnight, and I tried using both charging cables, taking out and superficially cleaning contacts with dry q-tips, still nothing.

2. The network adapter WILL connect to our home wifi, but not the internet.  I've tried all kinds of trouble shooting, but this one it major problem and I've done all I can.  Reset modem/router combo, plugged ethernet directly in to laptop.  My dv6 connects and works fine, but his was right next to mine showing it was connected to the modem/router, but no internet access.

Any help appreciated.  He really wants to learn to code, but that aint happening on my work laptop, lol.  Thank you in advance.

Hi teufeldog0231 and welcome to our forums.

:welcome:

Sorry to hear about the problems with the laptop computer, we will do our best to help, but first some questions for you:

1 When you purchased the new HP ;laptop and had a tech install Windows 7 did he install all the required drivers from HP for you,? or did he just wipe the drive and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows and leave it at that?

2 After the install of Windows 7 has the computer ever been able to successfully connect to the Internet and be used in the normal way?

3 If the answer to 2 above is Yes then please advise the approximate date it stopped being able to connect to the Internet.

4 You say

"I began working on his and it now has two major issues"

Can you outline what work you did on it please?

5 Have you checked in Device Manager to see if  there are any yellow or red markers against any of the devices? particularly check the network adapters.... there should be at least 2, a wired Ethernet adapter and also a wireless network adapter, if you right click on them and click on Properties it should say if they are working correctly.

6 Have all Windows updates been installed? can you advise please the date the latest update was installed (you can access this via Control Panel and Windows Updates.)

7  I understand that the laptop will connect to your home network but not the Internet....and even when connected via Ethernet cable directly to the modem it still will not connect to the net, if this is correct then please open a command prompt with elevated privileges

Click on Start type cmd, wait for a few seconds then right click cmd.exe (it should appear higher up the page...the .exe suffix may be missing, that is Ok just carry on! and click on Run as Administrator

At the black DOS type window that will open type at the flashing cursor the following command

sfc /scannow

and press enter key once

(note there is a space twixt the "c" and the "/" it needs to be there otherwise the scan will not work)

The scan can take up to half an hour or so to run... when its finished it will say that errors were fixed or no integrity violations were found etc... please tell us exactly what its says...

8 to get rid of the DOS type black window type at the flashing cursor

exit

and press enter key once and the black window will go away.

I appreciate that there are a lot of questions there but do please remember that some of us here may be many thousands of miles away from you so we need you to tell us what you see.

If you need any clarification on any of this then don't worry, just post back on anything you are having trouble with, and we will provide a more detailed step by step for it

Regards
