Building Comp,

MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard will not boot. Computer comes on for one second, lights, fans and all. Then shuts down. Checked all connections. Thinking it was the PSU, TX650 Corsair, disconnected all non essentials and tried to reboot. Same result. One second and shut down. Checked RAM for seating and switched out all sticks, no results. Externalized Mobo to check for a short against the case. Mobo boots one second and shuts down. Mobo was just purchased and is refurbished. The PSU works fine on old computer with 3 hdds and Graphics card.

Any Ideas Guys ???

Looks like you covered all the basic step.   Did you completely remove all traces of the old TIM from both the CPU and the Cooler heatsink, then apply new TIM before reinstalling the cooler?  if yes, you need to check for faulty CPU install or bent pins.

With the board sitting on top of the empty MB box, nothing connected, RAM removed.    Remove the cooler then remove the CPU.   Check the socket for TIM contamination, inspect  for any bent pins, check the CPU in case a pin has snapped off and is in one of the holes. 

If all appears fine, clean off all traces of TIM, reseat the CPU, apply fresh TIM and install the cooler.

Connect the CPU fan to the CPU 1 header.   Connect the 24v and 12v main cables, ensure that the locking tabs are full engaged.

Switch on the PSU and with a small screwdriver briefly bridge the two power on pins on the front header panel.

If you did not have any damage to the CPU or socket and the issue persists, I would send the MB back.

 

If the fans spin up and keep running, please post back as further steps should be done in a particular order.

New CPU, i5 4690 when I seat it I made sure the small indents matched the seat, and locked it down. The cooler is a Corsair H55 water cooler. Came with TIM already on it. But I will do all you say and get back to you.Thanks

How is the troubleshooting going?   Did you find any socket damage, or a different problem?   An update would be appreciated.

Tested all possibilities. Replacing old PSU from a corsair TX650 to a new corsair 750. Replacing mobo with same model but new instead of used. Waiting on both to be delivered. If computer does the same thing, boot one second and shuts down, only thing left it could be is a bad CPU. which is a new i5 4690

I hope you can get some sort of  recompense on the MB.   

I think you would be very unlucky getting a Dud CPU now a days, is pretty rare,   If you do get the same result, long shot, short somewhere on/in the H55.   Fit the stock cooler and test. Let us know how it goes.

New mobo and PSU arrived. (all testing done externalized) Tested new mobo with new PSU before installation. All went well. Tested OLD mobo with new PSU. mobo booted one second and shut down. Placed new parts, mobo, PSU and CPU cooler into case. Booted up fine. Connected HDD, SSD, tested fine. Connected GTX 970 graphics card power supply (1x8 pin and 1x6 pin) tried to reboot and same thing happened. One second start then shut down. Ran second power supply to 6 pin instead of off the same line. Computer booted.  After building computer with all new parts and double checking connections computer booted up fine. Moved computer to desk and would not boot. Checked connections seemed the 24 pin power to mobo was not seated well. BCompute is working fine now Thank you,
