Hi, I am trying to check my mac to scan and remove malware.  I downloaded and opened an xls. file from Upwork yesterday.  I opened it in an old version of Excel (Microsoft Office 2008), then also in Preview.  Then, I deleted the file from my downloads folder, then deleted the Microsoft Office program.

I downloaded ClamXav and started scanning with it.  I am just scanning through everything that showed up in the source list, but I'm not sure if it will pick up everything (or if it is too much).  I've since read about other programs that might be better at this, so I'm looking for help in which one to use and how to make sure it picks up everything. I received an email from Upwork that this file is malicious and I am also curious to find out what it might do.  I want to change all of passwords, but trying to wait until after the scanning is done- and the scanning is taking a while.

Any advice will be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi msz3,

Welcome to GeeksToGo! :)

Beings that this is predominately a Windows forum, I can't guarantee how soon it will be before a Mac'er comes along that can answer your questions and comfort your concerns.

There is a possibility that you would get more attention if you posted this question on our Apple OSX forum.

Out of curiosity, I did do a bit of research and found many who have posted concerns about recent invite-only job proposal that are circulating with an xls (Excel) file attached. One example I found was posted on the Upwork forum back in June of this year. Another was posted at the end of August, see here. I also found an interesting MS article here that may help.
