:welcome:   Singlemumneedshelp,

Possibly a hardware as opposed to a software issue.

Please provide information about your computer, this includes is it a notebook or desktop, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) so that we can do some research.

Apologies for the delay getting back to you Singlemumneedshelp,  unforeseen circumstances have kept me away from home I`m afraid  :angry:

It's a desktop NEC

Not enough info for us unfortunately, if the computer is a standalone NEC computer as opposed to a Lenovo NEC then it could potentially be 5+ years old, components such as the power supply start to fail after prolonged use and we need the model name or number of the PC to find out the best way to check out your hardware.

Some model numbers at the link here, do any look familiar.

On the back it says utow-dai is that the one you mean or the other thing? It's at my mums house at the moment so if it's the other thing I'll check what it is tomorrow

Not sure what you mean by "the other thing" but not finding anything for utow-dai, see here will have to wait to see if you can find any other info.

Once we have the info as said we can check out the hardware, if for example there is an add on video card and the motherboard also has an integrated video chip we would suggest removing the add on video card and trying the integrated graphics to see if you then got a display.

FreeBooter;

We have no way of knowing the OPs tech ability, please do not suggest anything that may cause any risk to health and safety until we have determined this, you may know what you are doing but some folk are not aware of the electrocution or static risks, thank you for understanding.

Sorry but that does not help us any  :(

Please re-read the following from my reply #4 and in particular what I have highlighted in red;

If you cannot find this information we cannot safely advise you, it would not be wise for us to continue and you will need to have a local tech or suitably qualified person take a look a look at the computer, ensuring the safety of yourself and others comes before any sick computer.

Take a look at the example here that shows the inside of even the most basic of computers and I`m sure that you will understand why we must all be careful.
