I would like to update from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have run the upgrade advisor and am good to go there.

I have found what looks like a good deal at Software Empire.

https://softwareempi...stant-download/

Is this a legit company?

Is the download an update or will I have to reload everything I now have manually?

Thank you in advance.

Hello csurp34,

See BBB business review here

How it works, what you purchase is a digital download, you create an ISO either on a USB thumb drive or burned to DVD, you upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 using the option to preserve your files etc, excuse the title of the guide but see here for a step by step

Unfortunately I am back.

I bought the download, did what was needed and now have Windows 7 running.

The problem is that I can't activate it.

When I right click on computer, select properties and enter the product code I receive a message that Microsoft has blocked the code because it is invalid.

They sent me a replacement and same thing.

They want to send me a third code but i am dubious. If this is a reputable company as it is supposed to be, what are the odds that these product keys are no good? I am wondering if it might be something else?

Before I try with a new key I thought that I would check here first.

Thanks in advance.

Try the steps below;

1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  slui.exe 3
2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
3: Follow on screen instruction/s.

If the above does not work;

1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  slui.exe 4
2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
3. Select your Country.
4. Follow the instructions for phone activation (should be free of charge).

Thank you for the effort.

I tried these things again and same result.

I did contact Microsoft directly and they told me that the product keys are no good and that I should void the transaction and buy a product key directly from Microsoft.

I am looking into this now.

Thanks again.

Did Microsoft happen to say why the keys were no good, the place of purchase looks ok and there are plenty of positive reviews there from satisfied customers.

How much for the product key from MS, dependent on this it may be worth backing up your data and trying Windows 10 instead, you can download an ISO and try it before purchasing a product key that way.

No, the MS tech just said to contact a Microsoft store which I have near me.

I am waiting to hear back from Software Empire before I go further. Their tech support is closed on the weekend.

Yes, their reviews were mostly good but the continuing theme was invalid product keys. I believe that these keys are configured to only use once? Seems that they might be reusing them?

My older computer won't run Windows 10. Also I have a customer database going back 25 years that won't run on Windows 10. I am hoping to get the remaining 4 years of windows 7 and then see what is available then.

Thanks again. will report back when resolved.

Hard to say but if it wasn`t legit Microsoft would have shut them down for sure.

You are welcome btw  :) hopefully your next update will be better news and your database secure for the next 4 years at least.

Software Empire eventually, after sending me three product keys, decided that they had received bad keys from their non-microsoft vendor and refunded my charge.

I pointed out to them that wasn't really a help as without activation, I would soon be out of business. They promised to resolve it and said that it would take 24-48 hours.

After six days and no further response to my emails, I moved on.

Note that Software Empire is still advertising this product so buyer beware.

Enter this company:

http://www.windows7keysale.net/

They sold me a key for $31 and it activated!

This is the procedure that I used:

I right clicked on computer and clicked on properties .

I then clicked on "change product key" and entered the key.

The key was verified and it shows that Win 7 is activated.

Great news but what I am unsure of is that I thought that I had to activate by phone?

So far so good but it has only been a few hours.

Activating by phone tends to be required when re using a product key, a clean install after replacing a failed HDD for example.

Thanks for the update btw  have you post the relevant info on the Software Empire site.

The SE site does not allow direct reviews.

I did post to the BBB site linked above in this thread.

The new company got back to me and told me that my activation was fine the way that I did it.

So, now on to adding RAM and hopefully 5 more years.

I will start a separate thread for that.

Thanks again.
