So, while starting up a game the other day, my computer locked up (no video, no keyboard response, audio still running). After restarting, I would get past the Gigabyte BIOS logo screen, then the machine would freeze and a white horizontal line appeared in the upper half of the screen, with a series of colored dots just above it. I was able to enter BIOS after restarting again, didn't seem to see any missing hardware or other issues (it doesn't report GPU stats). I would get the exact same artifact pattern on the screen each reboot, followed by total lock-up.
I assumed a dead video card, so I removed it and booted up with my monitor connected to the mobo via HDMI, and I booted into Windows normally (not safemode) with onboard video. It's been going for a day with no issues (other than not having a proper GPU!).
My issue is this: I'm concerned that maybe the PCIE slot on the mobo went bad and the card itself is actually still good, but don't have another card to test in it. Also, I experienced some random restarts in past weeks, but they seemingly only happened in a specific game (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided). So, now I'm thinking maybe my PSU is faulty or maybe even under-strength for the card (though everyone I asked said 650w is enough for my setup).
I guess I'm curious what you guys think; just a case of faulty GPU, or could its death have been caused by secondary issues like the mobo or PSU?
Other notes:
- Power lights on the card are still on and fans are running
- Heat has never been an issue for any of my components
- Nothing I have is currently overclocked
- No recent driver updates to the GPU
