Asus X55c, x64, i3, 4Gb Ram, 320 Gb HDD.

It's very slow to start up after hibernation, cold boot or warm boot. Especially slow following any updates to windows. have checked all malware, AVG, malwarebytes etc without issue. Tried to isolate the problem with boot options in msc. Quite often get the disk reading 100 or 99% also, and can take upto 20 minutes to stabilise. HDD is less than a year old. IE, Chrome and Fox all very slow to respond.

Some help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Have you try Clean Booting Windows to see issue resolves while Windows clean booted if does then one of the startup program or service causing the issue.

Can you tell us which process is utilizing HDD more then others for long period of times.

Yes,  have tried that, as I said in my initial post, I tried all the various boot options. As for the disk running at 100%, task manager only reveals that AVG and Chrome are 'active', but not to the extent of 100%., maybe 1.2 or 2.5 %.

I have disabled AVG previously, didn't really have any noticeable impact at all.

Seems a bit drastic, there are literally millions of people using AVG.

What alternative would you suggest? Assuming I follow your recommendation.

I have removed AVG, not a huge difference though. It is slightly quicker from cold boot, but still unsatisfactory.

Use the built-in Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. Just make sure they are enabled (look at Control Panel).

That's what I use along with Malwarebytes anti-malware (I have Pro) and anti-exploit.

So, eventually got round to reinstalling Windows 10 pro, not any noticeable difference to performance.

Still getting Disk at 95-100% when pc is idle
