I just recently factory restored my laptop and have ran into an issue that I have never had before. I am running Windows 7 and upon restoring my laptop to it's factory settings, I am unable to find, download or install any Windows Updates or ANY drivers of any kind. When I open Windows updates from the control panel and click find updates it will sit in a loop saying, "Checking for updates". I have tried downloading the convenience rollup package and the prerequisite pack and upon trying to install the prerequisite package first it did the same thing, remained in a loop saying, "searching for updates on this computer". Also not sure if it is also related, but my CPU and RAM are higher than they were before the factory restore.

P.S. Also wanted to state, that I had started a forum earlier in the week because I was unable to install any antivirus programs (I tried installing both Avira and Bitdefenders separately and both programs would never open up to the control panel for the program and the system tray icon would disappear immediately after showing up. After speaking with a tech in that forum we established that I have no virus on my computer and eventually was able to get Avira installed and working. Now I just need to fix this Windows Update issue. I figured I would mention this assuming maybe the antivirus issue might also be related.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bryan1284,

The Windows Update problem is a know one created by Microsoft...

- First Disable Automatic Updates:
Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Change settings > select "Never check for updates"
- Restart the computer
- Go to this page http://wu.krelay.de/en/ and Install manually the updates listed here in order, that apply to your Windows
- If any of the updates says it's already installed simply Cancel and move on to the next Update;

Notes:
- After installing each update if you get a prompt to restart the computer choose No until you install the last update on the list
- IMPORTANT: After installing each update you need to Stop the Windows Update Service if you don't do this the install will get stuck searching for updates...

  • press Windows7_key_R2.pngand type services.msc
  • locate Windows Update on the list of services, right click on it and click Stop

After installing the updates and restart the computer open the Control Panel -> Windows Update and search for updates, let it run for some time until it lists the updates that you need to install
