Hi there, I've just finished building my first gaming pc and when I tried to turn it on nothing happened. Only the GPU LED turned on (bright white but not the leds that iluminate the strix logo). Ive tested the PSU via the paperclip method outside of the case and the PSU fan turned on. I've tried testing the motherboad outside the case (using a key to start the power via the power switch pins), however nothing happened no sound or anything. Here are the specs for my build:

 

Motherboard: Asus h110m plus

GPU: Asus strix 980ti

RAM: 8gb crucial

CPU: Intel i5 6500

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master 212 evo

PSU: EVGA 600b bronze rated

I don't know what next step to take as it seems like any of those parts can be defective. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thankyou.

 

UPDATE: I have got the motherboard working and a fan by unplugging the CPU power supply. Does that mean the CPU is defective?

If your CPU is not the unlocked k version that does not ship with a stock cooler using this was not a good idea, you may have somehow damaged the CPU when fitting the third party cooler, if so you have voided the Intel warranty.

Hi there, I appreciate your quick reply. Yes the motherboard is still out, I have checked with other devices are running from the mother board (NZXT hue +) and it does work so looks like the problem may be the cpu. Have you got any suggestions on what to do from here? Tomorrow I may be taking some of the parts to a computer store to check which one is faulty. Once again, I appreciate you reply. Do a barebones set-up on a piece of cardboard (make sure it is larger than the MB) only connect the PSU, the screen to one of the video ports on the MB, the 4 pin ATX power supply, the 24 pin main power supply and the CPU cooling fan to the MBs 4 pin CPU fan header on the edge of the MB.

 

Short out the 2 power on pins on the MB header to get the PSU to activate, you can use a small flat bladed screwdriver or a paper clip bent into a U shape, please do not use a key.

 

If there is no change after doing this I suggest that you remove the CPU and inspect it to check for bent or missing pins using a magnifying glass.

Unfortunately, I have already tried that but to no avail. The fans will work, however as soon as I put in the CPU power supply (4 pin) the motherboard won't turn on at all. I guess only option for me is to take it to the computer shop as I dont have a magnifying glass aha. Thanks once again!

The CPU could be shorting out.

 

Carefully remove the Cooler Master 212 evo and the CPU.

 

Inspect the CPU and the socket on the MB the best that you can, if all looks ok, you will need some rubbing alcohol to remove the old thermal paste from atop of the CPU, once cleaned, fit the stock cooler that shipped with the CPU and then repeat the same bare bones test, make sure that you are shorting out the two pins as those in my attachment.
